Tuesday evening about 8:30 Mr. Cy
rus Bacon died suddenly at bis home at
Forest Grove and three hours later his
aged wife also passed away. They were
old people who moved into Forest Grove
last fall from their farm at Bacons, on
Dairy Creek, eighteen miles northeast of
there. They were in about usual health
for old people until a few weeks ago.
Mrs. Bacon was taken with the grip
and since then she has been confined to
her bed considerable of the time. The
old gentleman, though quite feeble, had
been around as usual. Tuesday evening
he had beer, waiting on his wife, and sat
down by the lied. As he sat there he
leaned over and vomited into a vessel,
then leaned back into a chair and his
liekd ¡dropped. Friends came to his
assistance at once, but he gave onlv one
gasp and did not breathe again. Dr.
Via was called but could do nothing
He thought death was due to cerebral
hemorrhage.
Mrs. Ba eon was greatly excited at I
seeing her aged companion pass away
and got out of lied trying to aid him.
She talked constantly about it and
wondered what would become of her.
She grew gradually worse and at 11:30
she too breathed her last.
Mr. Bacon was about 80 years of age
and his wife about 70. Eighteen years
ago they came west from Illinois and
settled on their farm which had been
their home until they moved to town in
the fall. They leave nine children, all of
them living and all out on this coast ex
cept a dai,ghter in Kansas and a son in

E ugene Or., April 17.—The execu
tion of E. E. Lyons, the murderer of
Sheriff W. W. Withers, took place in
the jailyard here this morning. There
were present the Sheriff's jury and about
120 invited persons.
Lyons displayed more nerve than was
expected. Yesterday he seemed in a light
frame of mind, and even joked with his
guards. He ate a hearty dinner last even
ing and slept lightly during the night.
This morning he took a light breakfast,
but showed signs of emotion. Rev. H.
A. Green and Rev. F. E. Billington vis
ited him in his cell this morning and ad
ministered spiritual comfort, spending
the time up to the hour of execution in
prayer and consoling talk.
At 9 o’clock Sheriff Fisk entered the
cell to read the death warrant. Lyons
was lying on the bed, but arose and
listened to the reading of the warrant
without any manifestation of emotion,
wearing a blank expression upon his
countenance and saying nothing. Shortly
before 9:30 the prisoner was brought
from the cell and walked to the scaffold,
attended bv the two clergymen. Sheriff
Fisk and Deputies H. E. Bawn and
Shelton Jenkins. His step was quite
steady as he ascended the scaffold and
took his place on the trap, and he stood
unsupported while the straps were
