Mr. Roval Stillwell and Miss Florence
M Ford headed the grand parade in the
matrimonial procession for this year in
Tillamook. They were married at the
Methodist parsonage on New Year’s Day
by the Rev. Gabriel Sykes. They are both
well known in this county, with a large
number of relatives and friends, who
extend their congratulations and best
wishes to the happy couple.
Mrs. Looser,wife ofRev. J. Looser, will
teach German on Saturdays. She has
been given the use of one of the rooms of
the public school for her class, which
meets on Saturday morning from 9 till
11.30 a.m. and from 12:30 till 2:30 p.m.
The studies will be in reading, writing
and language. It was at the soliciation
of a number of persons that Mrs. Looser
decided to start a class.
William Heitmiller, who was sent to
the state penitentiary for four years for
attempting to kill Emil Arndt by shoot­
ing and wounding him twice at the saw
mill at Hobsonville, died at Salem on
Monday from typhoid fever. His death
was anticipated on accoudt of the seri­
ousness of his sickness. His bodv will be
broi ght to Tillamook for burial.
D cd, on Monday morning, of consump­
tion, Keda Niger, the 16 year daughter of
Mr. and Mrs. John Niger. The deceased
was buried on Wednesday in the Odd­
fellows’ cemetery, the religious services
being conducted by Rev. J. Looser, pas­
tor of the German Reformed Church, at
the home and at the grave, where a num­
ber of sympathising friends gathered and
showed their respect for the bereaved
family.
Hugh Rittenhouse met with an acci­
dent on Sunday which came near caus­
ing to bleed to death, but as it is he will
be maimed for life. Rittenhouse, who
is about 19 years of age, was batching
on his mother’s place at Balm, and ou
Sunday Alva Richet went up there. The
latter loaded a gun for the purpose of
doing some shooting. After the young
men had been in the house, Richet came
out and saw there were a number of
duck on the lake. Richet told Ritten­
house to come out and shoot them, but
he at first declined and told Ricket to
take the gun
and shoot them.
Rittenhouse took the gun and went
out to take a shot. He did not examine
the gun to ascertain whether the wea­
pon was correctly loaded by Richet, and
after taking aim and pulling the trigger,
Rittenhouse was suddenly surprised to
find only the butt of the gun in his right
hand and his left hand badly shattered.
He did not stop to ascertain what had
become of the barrel, but started off for
where he could get the wound dressed»
It bled profusely, and after proceeding
nearly a mile he became exhausted from
the loss of blood. Mr. F. R. Beals, who
was returning from Nehalem, brought
the unfortunate young man to the city
Sunday evening, and Dr. Wiley found it
necessary to amputate the hand above
the wrist. Rittenhouse was so exhaust­
ed after the operation that it was neces­
sary to keep him in the doctor’s office all
night.
At a meeting of the hose company on
Thursday evening, the annua) election of
officers took place, with this result: Fred
C. Baker, president ; Henry Crenshaw,
chief; Howard Edmunds, secretary ; C.
I. Clough, treasurer. The city has been
remarkably free from fires the past year,
only two alarms being turned in. These
fires were promptly put out without any
loss of property, one with the chemical
appliances added to the equipment last
vear by the company, the chief remark,
ing that at that fire, had the water
been turned on, it would have destroyed
more property than the first cost of the
new appliances. This was thought ex­
ceedingly satisfactory, so much so it is
suggested that more chemicals be added
as soon as the company is in a position
to purchase them. Treasurer Clough’s
report showed a little o/er $20 in hand.
The annual fireman’s ball will take place
on the 22nd Feb. As the tendency of
thegeneral public is to crowd in where
there is a fire, to-wit, such as took place
at the Acklev and Woolfe fires, the city
council will be asked to pass an ordi­
nance giving the firemen the authority of
special policemen to keepthecrowd back.
It was reported there were a number of
defective flues and chimneys within the
fire limits, and in order that these fire
traps be removed, on motion of the com
pany, it was recommended that Mayor
Talmage appoint Chief Crenshaw the
fire warden of the city. The newly elect­
ed officers promised an ‘At Home” at
the next regular meeting, at which every
member is expected to be present.
