Ye Editor and De Preachers.
[ to editor or T illamook headlight .]
D ear S ir :—Permit me, ir. Iiehalf of the
Tillamook Ministerial Association, to
remind yon of a matter that yor, evi
dently, had forgotten when you penned
your editorial condemning the preachers
for attempting to do their duty as citi
zens because, forsooth, they happen to
be mostly new ones.
Is it not the duty of ministers, and
everybody else, to seek to bring about
respect for law and order, so that we
may preserve and advance our civiliia*
tion, and may this duty be overlooked
just liecause a person happens to be a re
cent arrival in a community ?
I know you are ready to give the only
piopcr answers to such questions.
Very well ; that is exactly what these
men were doing. They asked no candi
date in the canvas for city election any
more radical question than this,“ Are you
willing to enforce the laws relating to
certain institutions here, which have for
a long time violated them ?•’
Regretting that you did not have the
full courage of opinion previously put
forth in your paper (and hence did not
feel ready to assist in such laudable
work), but must go out of your way to
condemn the very men who were doing
this.
I remain, in behall of the Ministerial
Association, Yours Sincerely,
G abriel S ykes .
Tillamook, Oreg , Dec. 3, 19' 1.
both are liable to make mistakes and err
in judgment. But, of course, the editor
is always the blackest sinner, for he has
to put his opinions into cold print, while
the preacher has not—no matter how
radical they are or how severely he may
criticise others—and this is where he has
the advantage over the editor.—E ditor .]
