Keep Your Eyes on the Anti’s.
In county politics it looks as though
men are seeking the offices instead of the
offices seeking the men. Probably the
republican convention will want some
thing to say, and for that reason many
a politician have found out to their sor
row there is many a slip between the cup
and the lip. As an instance of this in the
last con vention,made up of representative
republicans, the anti-Sappington and
anti-Maxwell sentiment which predomi
nated there. We have taken some pains
to ascertain whether that sentiment pre
vails today. It does, and to a larger
extent than it did two years ago. We
simply state these things as fact, for the
county is still anti-Maxwell and anti
Sappington to the very core, and those
who attempt to antagonize this popular
sentiment will find out that a large ma
jority of republicans are anxiously wait
ing the time to go into the primaries and
convention toexpress their anti-Maxwell
and anti-Sappington sentiments. Isn't
that so, bdys ?

the same thing by republicans. It
may appear of not much importance to
call attention to this, but no one can tell
what a rule or ruin faction will do to
gain its own ends or the voters do to

have its legislative ticket defeated. But
it is well to note the sign of the times in
New York also, that political bosses and
the henchmen had to succumb to the will
of the people. And we may add that i

much in vogue for the interest of the gen

Don't be Extinguished, Professor.
Prof. B. 0. Snuffer’s name is connected
with that of state superintendent oi
schools on the democratic ticket, or in
other words thev want to put his name
on the democratic slate and the political
wire pullers at the democratic convention
will see that no “dark horse” is put up
against him—that’s the way they fix
things in the two political parties, and
now is the season ot the year when those
with political bees in their bonnets get
in and do their work. We don’t want to
do a thing to Prof. Snuffer at the next
election, and for that reason we think
he should consider twice before he con
sents to allow himself to be put up for
the purpose of being knocked down like
some Aunt Sally. There is no doubt
but what the professor’s name would
add strength to the democratic ticket for
he is a good school man, but here is the
sticking point, it is not characteristic of
the professor to throw his energies into
something where there is no likehhood of
success and for the purpose of making a
futile attempt to left the democratic
party in Oregon out of the slough of des
pair. Prof. Snuffer will obtain a more
lasting reputation as the principal of
Tillamook Citv public school than he
will by running on a democratic ticket,
for he is engaged in a field where the de
mand for high school education liecomes
more and more apparent, and if he is in
strumental in bringing this about the
Headlight would take great pleasure in
future years in suggesting the professor's
name as a candidate for state superin
tendent of public schools—on a republi
can ticket.

Reid’s veracity. It is a well known fact
that Tillamook conntv is the most pros
perous section of Oregon, and we will de
fy Mr. Reid to point out a large section
of country in thestate where the farmers
hold their land from $50, $75 and even
$100 an acre and refuse to sell at those
figures. That is the condition of affairs
and the value of dairy ranches in Tilla
mook, as Mr. Reid would find out if he
undertakes to buy the right of way thro,
ugh one with the few’ $25 put up bv the
stockholders. But how absured it is for
the company to say that Tillamook is
valueless, when, to buy a right of way
across but one dairy farm would bust
that company. Mr. Reid had better con
fine himself to the truth when writing
about Tillamook. The Oregonian the
same day said in an editorial, “Yet its
people forge ahead in their own way
and grow year by year in prosperity.”
