COHN & CO., The Leaders of Low Prices CHANCE FOR HOMESTEADS I Part of Grand Ronde Reservation Will be Thrown Open Soon. j There will be quite a rush for home- Istcads on the Grand Ronde Indian reser- Ivationnext Summer, in the opinion of I Lewis Shortridge, a merchant of Dolph, I Tillamook Countv, who, with hisdaugh- Iter, is registered at the Perkins, “ That I portion of the reserve not allotted to the I Indians is to be purchased from them I by the Government at$L 10 an acre, and I is verv likely to be thrown open to set- Itlenient in July next,” said Mr. Short- I ridge yesterday, “ and there are quite a I number of tracts that can be trans- I formed into good homes. The big timber I was all destroyed by fire as early as the I year 1842, and so there will be no induce- I incut for timber land hunters, but parties I desiring to go into the business of dairy- ling or stockraising can find desirable I localities there. There are about 90,000 I acres in the reservation, and about one- I half of the tract will be absorbed by I Indians, ot whom there are now 350. The I Government donates 80 acres to each I man, woman and child, and the rcniain- | tier will probably be thrown open to the I whites, under the homestead law, which I allows each citizen 160 acres free, after I residence and improvement. I “ The Indians arc now left prett}' well Ito themselves, so far as the paternal care t of the Government is concerned, ami the [only agents of Uncle Sam in the reserve [are a school teacher and a doctor. A I few very old Indians are helped in the | matter of provisions, medicine and cloth- ling, but the younger ones have to rustle I for themselves. Most of them are only [concerned about the present and so do I not try to get ahead much. Thej have I verv good houses as a general thing, but I the premises are run down and bespeak I a general air of shiftlessiiess not found e in a white community. I A good toll road leads into the coun try from Sheridan, Yamhill County, and I the extension of a railroad from some point on the West Side would bring it wit hi 11 a few hours of Port Lind, where a ! good market exists for all that we raise. Although not a grain-raising county, money is very plentiful in Tillamook, as I the dairymen and lumbermen have done well in the past few years. We buy all our flour from Y’anihillCountv, however, and wc haven’t a gristmill in all Tilla mook.*’—Oregonian. Real Estate Transfers. George Irwin to H. F. Good speed, various tracts. [ U.S. to D. G. When the poor mail disagrees with the doctrine presented by the pastor ot the church in which he seeks spiritual conso lation, he resigns his membership mid finds another guide, philosopher and friend wiiose exposition ofcreed and faith more nearly tallies with his preconceived ideas. There is not much difficulty in this age of varying and fluctuating the ology in finding anyihing we may sees— all that is necessary is to knock and it shall be <>|>ei>ed unto us. When John D. Rockefeller desires to hear religion preached alter the Rocke feller theory of salvation be hires the preacher, informs him that be must ex pound the Gospel according to Rocketed- ler and dis.airses the subject from his mind as he would dismiss the |>ersonality of a hired clerk or a bookkeeper. This new pastor whom Mr. Rockefeller has hired for "the highest salary ever paid to a divinity student who is not yet ordained a minister.” is described as a verv voting man, and it is hinted that it is the intention of Mr. Rockefeller to “bring him tiu" in the wav lie should go. The great man has probably tired of try- ing to make anything out ot grown-up preachers, and is now intent upon catch ing his preacher young and training him properly as lie would train n young busi ness man to manage one of the depart ments of his oil traffic.
