Leon F. Czolgosz, the most
infamous assassin in all history,
lias been convicted, in strict con
formity to the law, of the ex
ecrable murder of President Mc
Kinley.
His trial has been
speedy, but justice has not been
marred in the slightest degree in
reaching the consummation most
devoutly hoped for by the people,
not only of the United States,
but of the whole civilized world.
His sentence will follow swiftly,
and yet deliberately. Then will
come the final act for his base
life—death in the electric chair.
The detestable miscreant re
ceived infinitely more considera
tion at the hands of the outraged
people of the United States than
lie showed his illustrious victim.
He struck down with fieudish
malignity, paralleled only by
Judas, the revered chief magis

deserved to have been torn limb
from limb, to have been tortured
to death, with his agony as long
d awn out as he compelled the
st perb man wh m lie murdered
nv s foully to suffer. He could
not have expected from Christian
civilization, against which he
had sworn s.itanic warfare, any
pity or the shadow of mercy.
Instead, however, of receiving
what stern justice would have
awarded to him, Czologosz was
tried fully, fairly and in strict
accordance to the laws. He was
granted every possib e considera
tion.
He had as his counsel two of

Chicago has introduced a new
requirement that must be met
by those desiring to teach in the
public schools. All applicants
for a teacher’s certificate must
pass a physical examination.
The Chicago Post in comment
ing on this new action of the
board says that comparison, phy
sically, of those now applying
with those who applied a year
ago “ warrant the examiners in
pronouncing the test highly
valuable.” It is without doubt
a good idea and will make it ne
cessary for the young teachers
to take care of themselves and
those who are no longer in good
health will be forced to with-
draw.

Creaceus, the world's trotting
champion, hurt his leg when a
colt and was ordered killed by
his owner, but he escaped death,
recovered and from an ornery,
most unpromising animal as a
yearling has developed into king
of the turf. This leads us to re
mark that there are lots of boys
like this horse — mischievous,
ornery little rascals who seem as
though they ought to be killed
on general principles, who later
on pan out into splendid men.
