Somehow, it looks awfully bad to see
some of our citizens sending outside for
their printing. Let’s be public spirited
enough to support and patronize local
businesses and build up local trade, and
not send little orbig jobs of printing out
side to be done.
The river and harbor committee has
left Washington on its tour of inspection
and it appears to us the citizens ought
to be enthusiastic and public spirited
enough to send a deputation to Portland
to meet the committee, and if for no
other reason to express regrets that the
committee is unable to visit Tillamook.
Judge R. P. Boise and Mr. f. Voorhees,
secretary of the Lower Columbia Fire
Relief Association, will speak at Nehalem
on Wednesday, the 12th inst., upon the
work of the Patrons of Husbandry and
legislation. .They will also sjieak at Fair
view Grange hall on Friday, the 14th
inst. There will be a Grange meeting in
the day and a public meeting at night.
When Mr. B. C. Hadley stated on the
street the other night that if the city
was bonded for a water system liefore it
was completed considerable of the money
would be swallowed up by a graft is a
truism which cannot lie gainsaid. And
we may add what a lively time there
would >»e at every city election by those
are anxious to get on the pay roll of the
city.
Don’t this sound great ? The agent
who came to this city and wangled the
hose contract returned to Poitland and
kicked about poor transport a tion. when,
in point of fact, we are now getting as
good a service as can lie expected, for the
Sue H. Elmore has made four or five trips
since the hose contract was let, but still
the hose has not arrived. That man
ought to be put off at Boston.
The Portland, Nehalem & Tillamook
Railroad Company continues to build
this railroad in the columns of the Ore
gonian, and if the promoters persist in
this much longer they will have enough
newspaper articles to reach direct from
Portland to Tillamook City. All it now
requires is for the Oregonian to pile on
the agony a little more and then the pro
moters will be able to lay the line with
newspaper articles.
President Hays, of the Southern Paci
fic, arrived in Portland on Monday and
was asked this question : “Has your
visit any bearing on the Nehalem rail
road project
And to this he replied ■_
“What is that project ?’* He followed
this with other questions as to the re-,
sources of the Nehalem country and the |
demand for them in Portland. “1 Jhad
not heard that Portland needed cheaper
sawlogs,’’ he said. From this it would
appear that the Southern has no inten
tion at present of extending the road
from Sheridan.
The Pacific Rubber Co. dunned the city
for $800 for the fire hose it has failed to 1
deliver. Did the company think that it
could hoodoo the city again ? It looks
that way. But the laugh won’t be on
city any longer if the officials refuse to
accept the hose when it reaches here. A

little retaliation would be good medicine
tn this instance, and the citv dads will,
no doubt, let off some of their pent up
powder at the proper time, just to show |
the rubber company that it can be fooled 1
once but not fooled all the time.
Mrs. Jones takes this opportunity for
thanking the people of Tillamook and
vicinity for their kindness and liberality
to the Oregon Children’s Home Society.
Mrs. B. L. Eddy and Mrs. J.D. Edwards
have consented to act as local agents for
said society. Anyone desiring to assist
' this worthy cause, who have not lieen
called upon, or were not prepared at this
time, can do so through these ladies.
Anyone knowing of a homeless child, or
a childless home, that would like to
adopt one of the children will also com
municate with the local agents.
It is now 13 years since the H eadlight
made its first appearance, for with this
issue brings another year of its existence
to a close, the first paper being issued on
June 8, 1888. So it is the H eadlight ’ s
birthday tomorrow. During these years
the paper has faithfully, fearlessly and
zealously devoted itself to the progress
and development of Tillamook county
and the best interest of the citizens, and
this it will continue to do in the future.
If the H eadlight is a little plain spoken
at times, then this is not a bad trait in its
character, for the public press, to amount
to anything, must be tin tampered with,
fearless and independent.
Mr. Kasper Schlappi was getting his
milk cans into his wagon at the South
Prairie creamery on Saturday morning,
when the team became scared and start
ed off. In reaching for the reins he was
thrown from the wagon and caught in
one of the wheels and was whirled around
with it, and while in that position had
his right arm broken near the wrist, the
musles of his legs badly strained and a
wound on the head. Dr. Wiley was tele
phoned for and he immediately started
to attend to the man’s inquries. It was
thought that Mr. Schlappi might be in
ternally injured, but he is improving as
well as can be expected after meeting
with so serious an accident.
Talk about the wholesale merchants
of Portland being desirous of holding the
trade from Tillamook county, we are in
clined to think that their determination
not to handle Tillamook cheese unless
they receive 1% cents per pound torso
doing is poor thanks for the large
amount of business they have received
from Tillamook merchants, who handle
a large proportion of the cheese manu
factured in this county. San Francisco
nor the Sound wholesale merchants
would never think of serving their best
customers like this. If the Portland
wholesale merchants insist upon being so
exacting and will not recriprocate, tnen
they must not complain if they lose more
of the trade from Tillamook.
All the members of the city council were
present at the meeting on Monday, and
besides the water franchise ordinance, the
council took up the matter of Congress
man Tongue’s reply to the invitation of
the river and harbor committee to visit
Tillamook. It having been seen that the
committee could not come and that it
was likely that Mr. Burton, chairman of
the committee would visit Oregon later,
it was decided to send an invitation to
that gentlemen and Mr. Tongue to visit
this county for the purpose of looking
over the situation in regard to govern
ment improvements of the bar and bay.
Bills allowed were: Water company,
$30 ; recorder’s salary, $10; Electric
Light Co., $4-1.55 ; marshal's salary,
$40.

CLOTHING that LOOKS WELL is not always
the kind to buy, but they must be the kind that
WEAR WELL.
In other words they should be as GOOD AS THEY
LOOK. OUR IDEA OF GOOD QUALITY is per
haps different from some others, Not Cheaper, But
Better for the Money, is what we think should first
be considered.
We want to ELL YOU YOUR CLOTHING, and
therefore do not wish to palm off on you some inferior
article for the Genuine, but appeal to your judgment,
knowing you to be reasonable.
A Poor Cow costs its owner as much to keep as a
good one, and therefore IS DEAR AT ANY PRICE.
Likewise A Poor Suit of Clothes cost nearly as
much to make as a good one, and therefore quality
must be taken from the Material Alone, in order to
make the whole cheap, leaving the Suit Not Worth
Having.
But wheu you combine quality of material with the
making you obtain a good suit, one you can guarantee,
and one which will be a pleasure to sell, and a pleasure
for anyone to wear.
You can wear one of these suits for years, knowing
they will not fade, bag or rip, while perhaps your
neighbor’s which is of the cheap John grade, is sun-
burnt, faded, bagged, twisted and knock-kneed within
a few weeks.
We have cheap suits,' which we will sell you with
the profit off, so you will have as good for the money
as any one can sell you.
We recommend the better quality. We would ad
vise you to buy the better quality and to buy from
your home merchant, one who expects to remain
here, who pays taxes, and one who has his capital
invested here, and will be here to stand good for his
guarantees.
If you do not wish to trade with us, you have others
who are taxpayers and permanent residents, trade with
them.
It is the money of the taxpaying merchant that helps
to pay County Officers Salaries, build Roads,
Bridges, pays for Butter, Eggs, Cheese, Wood, ftc.
It is the taxpaying merchants that employ« clerks,
carpenters, painters, buys lumber, builds bnfffltffj**,
and improves the county generally.
It is the taxpaying merchants names you see at the
head of every subscription list for charitable, benevolent
or patriotic purposes for public improvements.
Are they entitled to your patronage ? We think
they are.
What applies to our clothing, applies as well to our
whole stock. Come and see for yourselves.
