CIRCUIT COURT.
MissK. E Parker gets a Judgment
for $i,ooo against Claude Thayer.
Judge G. H. Burnett held circuit court
in this city on Monday, and, as usual,
the docket was exceedingly light, there
being only one case of any interest, that
of K. E. Parker, plaintiff, vs. Claude
Thayer, administrator of W. W. Thayer,
deceased, defendant. It was an action
for money, Miss Parker claiming that
during the month of May, 1895, she en
tered into an argeement and contract
wherein she was to perform certain office
and clerical work and services as steno
grapher and clerk in the law of W. W.
Thayer, and for such service he had pro
mised and agreed to pay Miss Parker an
amount sufficient to enable her to pur
chase a house and lot, the same to be at
least a seven room two-story house and
a lot not less than 100 feet square ; that
in pursuance of said agreement W. W.
Thayer was to purchase real estate for
the consideration of $1,000, which he did
at Ivanhoe, upon which W. W. Thayer
and Claude Thayer had paid the sum of
$308, leaving a balance due the plaintiff
of $692 and interest thereon, which she
now sued for. In addition to this Miss
Parker sued Claude Thayer for $1,000,
for certain and diverse house work and
duties caring for and attending to and
nursing, when sick, W. W. Thayer and
Samantha, his wife. This, the plaintiff
claimed, was at the special instance and
request of W. W. Thayer, who promised
and agreed to pay her a $1,000 fur per
forming these services. Messrs. S. C.
Spencer, of Portland, and B. L. Eddy
were attorneys for the plaintiff, and Judge
S. H. Cary, of Portland, and Mr. T. B.
Handley for the defendant. It took all
day Monday to examine and read the
testimony of witnesses, and dearly all
Tuesday morning to hear the arguments.
The jury brought in a verdict for Miss
Parker and allowed her $1,000. A mo-
tion for a new trial was made and Judge
Burnett took this under advisement, his
decision to be given during vacation.
The other cases were ;
State of Oregon vs. W. Schlotter. This
was a case in which the defendant was
charged with beating and ill-treating G.
W. Parrish, and pleading guilty the
judge fined him $10 and costs.
J. W. Roth, plaintiff, vs. H. T. With
row and Annie Withrow, defendants.
Judgment of thecounty court filed, which
was affirmed.
G. W. Kiger, plaintiff, vs. Frank Long,
defendant. Motion to dismiss filed by
plaintiff, which was granted.
W. J. May, plaintiff, vs. Florence A.
Hardman and S. M. Hardman, de
fendants. Action for money. The case
having be settled, it was dismissed.
