We have only the kindest of Christian
respect for Rev. R. Y. Blalock. But when
we published the announcements of the
prohibition convention and was the only
newspaper which gave publicity of Mr.
Woolley’s lecture in Tillamook, all of
which we did free of charge, we did not
eipect that the rev. gentleman would be
guilty of using such malicious falsehoods
about the editor, as he did at the meet
ing last week. We will not even repeat
the remarks which some prohibitionists
have made in going round repudiating
and not wishing to lie held responsible
for Mr. Blalock's bad break.

It appears from the report of the
bureau of statistics that for the nine
months which ended April 1, 1899,
2,317,174 gallons of spirituous liquors
were exported from this country ; during
the nine months which ended April 1,
1900, the export was 1,339,943 gallons
—a falling off of 997,24C gallons. In
view of this shrinkage of 40 per cent it
must be evident that if our army in the
Philippines, Porto Rico and Cuba is
devoting itself to the planting of saloons
it must get the spirits from some other
country than the United States.

the delay occasioned by the construction
of our own armor plate factory would
not in the end prove costly economy.
This ever-recurring armor plate fight has
practically blocked the work of building
up the navy and strengthening the forti
fications of our coasts. Nothing should
be allowed to stand in the way of that
great work. Those who love peace can
not better strive to that end than to aid
in the construction of great fleets, for we
have proved to a startled world how
well we know how to man and move
them in war. There is not a partisan so
biased or a man with pride so dull who
would not sacrifice much to place Amer
ica on equal terms with any nation on
the globe in the matter of ships and
farms as we are now in every other way.
We cannot console ourselves with the be-
lief that we have navy enough as long
as there is a single power in the world
who has a greater one. There is no war
like or martial spirit in this sentiment
for an increased navy and army. The
most devoted lover of peace has aban
doned the fanatical notions of disarma
ment and a supreme reliance in arbi
tration.
If we want a permanent,
healthy peace we must be well prepared
for war and even fight for it when dip
lomacy fails to preserve it.
