PASSING
REMARKS.
up while crossing the university campus,
and was relieved ofhis wealth. Although
he had such an amount of small change
in his pocket, he was not a landowner,
but rented the farm from which he had
made a good living and a surplus this
year. It may be a question whether it is
better to have won and lost than ¡to
have never won at all; but most of us
will take the chances of being sand
bagged of our earnings, rather than go
without them altogether. Previous to
the era of Republican good times, a high
waymen who was onto his business,
never thought of molesting a farmer. It
was a waste of time and a useless risk.
Mo man who earned his little money by
the sweat of bis brow was a good mark
for the holdup. During the Democratic
depression, men of this class were lucky
if they secured enough to pay for their
daily bread and meat on Sunday. To
day it is different. The farmer not only
earns enough to support his family com
fortably, but at the end of the year has
something besides—something, proba
bly, to pay off the mortgage he was ob
liged to put on his farm in Democratic
days or to pay for the farm he has ac
quired since those days passed.
