The preservation and increase of
the foed fishes of this State is a
thing that should command more
attention than it has hitherto had.
There can be no doubt that the
supply of fresh
ter fish is grow-
ing scarcer every year In this
county the trout fit-hing is not half
as good as it was a dozen years ago
and each year is just a little worse
than its predecessor. We presume
the same condition of things pre
vail in other sections of the State.
The remedy must Ire twofold. First
we should more carefully protect
the supply of fishalieady on hand,
and secondly hatcheries should be
established on every important
stream in the country.
Now that the fishing season han
tiegun it will be well for our officers
to nee that the law relative to
throwing various kinds of offal into
the tdoughe and rivers is strictly
enforced. Especially ehould the
people of thia city be protected
against the pollution of Hoquarton
slough by throwing into it the
heads, entrails and other remains
of ealmon, ralttd along ite shore».
Last year the water was polluted
for months by the indeecriminate
dumping of such matter into it.
The slough which is naturally an
unusually l>eautiful and clear sheet
of water wan rendered utterly un
sightly, the stench was intolerable
and the health of the people was
seriously endangered. Timely warn
ing should l>e given to all salmon
poachers along the water front and
the law be strictly enforced.
