    TILLAMOOK WEEKLY
THE
Which? -It Cannot Bn Both.
The paradoxes and fallacies of the
free silver advocates are plentifully il
lustrated in the interesting letters of
workingmen to The World.
One set stoutly maintain that there
would bo no cheap dollar or 60 cent
dollar under free coinage. If the white
metal were given unlimited coinage it
would instantly rise, they say, to $1.29
an ounce. The present price of 68 cents
they attribute to the demonetization in
1873, though a silver dollar was then
worth more than a gold one, and none
wus coined or in circulation.
Another and the more numerous class
at the south and west insist that what
tlie country needs is a cheaper dollar.
The g'xxi old gold dollar of Jefferson,
Jackson and Benton has been "forced
up” in value, they say. They want a
dollar of about half its value to increase
the prioeof their products and to enable
them to pay their debts at half the pres
ent cost and trouble. As Mr. Bryan
put it in his letter to The World, they
would "restore the parity between
money and property” by reducing the
value of the dollar.
Now both of these theories cannot be
true. They are flatly contradictory. If
silver would appreciate under free coin
age, there would be no cheap money.
Prices would not rise. Debts could not
bo scaled down. If it would not appre
ciate, the workingman’s saved dollars
would be reduced one-half in value, the
cost of his living would double and his
wages would not increase in anything
liko the ratio of the increase in his ex
penses.
Why is the best money too good for
wageworkers? What is the matter with
the highest standard of value in a coun
try where the highest wages and the
highest standard of living prevail? The
World begs the workingmen to think a
little deeper and a little further on this
vital subject.—New York World.
A Warning From Webster.
Ho who tampers with the currency
robs labor of its bread. He panders in
deed to greedy capital, which is keen
sighted and may shift for itn If, Lut ho
beggars labor, which is honest, unsus
pecting and too busy with the present
to calculate for the future. The pros
perity of the working classes lives,
moves and hits its being in established
credit and u steady medium of payment.
All sudden changes destroy it.
Honest industry never comes in for
any part of the spoils in that scramble
which takes place when the currency of
a country is disordered. Did wild
schemes and projects ever benefit the
industrious? Did violent fluctuations
ever do good to him who depends on
his daily labor for his dally bread? Cer
tainly never.
All these things may gratify greedi
ness for sudden gain or the rashness
of daring speculation, but they can
bring uotbing but injury and distress
to the homes of patient industry anil
honest labor.—Daniel Webster, Speech
at New York, 1837.
Chesting th. Creditor.
If these glorifiers of the old order of
things could restore the conditions that
prevailed previous to 1873 ami make
the market value of silver vvliat it was
then, they would not want free coinage.
There would bo nothing in it for them.
What they really want is cheap money,
a kind of money with which creditors
can be cheated. They are not trying to
put silver back to its old place and re-
i stablish the monetary system that ex
isted before the "groat crime” was
mitted. Their scheme does not imply
tl.o coinage of better dollars than those
wo now have, hut infinitely poorer ones,
which can Is* used in the payment of
debts at the nite < f 53 cents on the dol
lar.—St. Louis Globe-Democrat.

Opportunities
Farmers Not Im provi ax
Farmers are not impioving their op
portunities for poultry production as
they might. Comparatively few keep
aa many hens as the village mechanic or
the town fancier who makes the most of
his back lot. There are more of the
bitter than of the former whose hens
number up into the hundreds, and who
make » careful study of poultry produc
tion. This ought not to be so. Fifty or
seventy-five hen power poultry plants
are quite common on farms, but 300 or
500 hen-power farms are few anil far be-
tween. They should lie common, and
¡000, 2000, and even 3000 liens might be
kept on many farms by those who wil
carefully study the business, Do I know
wliat I am talking about? Yes, I think
I do. I know of 3000 hen egg farms that
have been successfully run for many
years. They are not, however, conduct
ed after the fanciers’ methods or by
closely following the directions laid
down ill the poultry books and papers.
The B»y in the Bundle.
An Iowa boy recently passed through an ex
perience which he will not forget if he lives to
be 100 years old. He is only five years old, and
i one day when his father went to the wheat
field to drive the harvester he took him along
and perched him on the high seat at his side.
For a time all this »as very interesting, but
presently the little fellow grew tired aud began
to squirm and complain. And then, just as his.
father was leaning over to look more closely at
some of the machinery, off tumbled the little |
fellow to the conveyor. He shrieked just once (
and his father tried vainly to stop the horses’
