TLLAMOOK COUNTY
REGION OF WONDERFUL FERTILITY
Brief Description of Its Climate
Resources etc.
Of all the counties of the Stateof Oregon there
is 110 other containing so much natural wealth
no other offering so many inducements to the
settler and none so little known to the outside
world, as the county of Tillamook. The fact of
its being little known to the outside world is
doubtless owing to mainly to its former
isolation and the fact that the real estate boomer
■ has for some reason or other never found his
way to this neglected little paradise in Western
Oregon.
LOCATION
The location of Tillamook County is favorable
both as to securing the best climate and trans
portation. It is bounded on the North by
Clatsop County, east by Yamhill and Washing
ton Counties and South by Lincoln County,
fhe county is indented by several good natural
harbors. The Neha’.em river, on the north,
forms a fairly good harbor and the Nestucca
river on the south and Netarts bay is equally
good Tillamook Bay is one of the best natural
harbors on the Pacific Coast. It is constantly
undergoing improvement at the hands of the
government. Being thus well supplied with sea
ports Tillamook is always certain ot reasonable
trans, ortation.
CLIMATE
Situated as this county is washed by the waters
of the Pacific, tempered by the waters of the
Japan current its climate is exceptionally mild
and pleasant. The heat of summer is never ex
cessive, the themometer rarely rising above 80
degrees. The nights arc always cool and
pleasant. In winter there is considerable rain,
but snow rarely falls and if it does it does not
remain on the ground, but is soon melted and
carried away by the warm rains. Grass grows,
green, the year round and stock requires but
little additional feed. Such a thing as irrigation
is unheard of and unknown.
HEALTFULNESS.
Owing to the above named conditions Tilla
mook County is one of the most healthful
places on earth. Malaria is unknown and Dip-
theria, Typhoid fever and kindred diseases never
occur where even the most ordinary care is
taken to establish good sewage. Pneumonia
is exceedingly rare and consumption, except in
some cases that are brought here, is almost un
known.
PRODUCTIVENESS
The soil of Tillamook is unequalled for rich
ness and depth. The prairies are of compara
tively small area, but are excellent for grass,
The richbottcm lands are however far richer
and will produce any kind of crop desired, but
are especially adapted to root crops. Potatoes
beets, car lots, etc. yield enormous crops, while
oats, clover, timothy and all kinds of grasses
produce astonishing results. Wheat and corn
can be grown profitably, but the land is far
more valuable for other purposes. The whole
country is abundantly watered by rains and
clear, never failing mountain streams, and ar
tificial irrigation is unnecessary and unknown.

EMPLOYMENT.
We are often asked what chance there i* here
to secure employment for wages. Our reply in
variably is-very little. This is a county of
homes, farms and
dairy ranches. The
settlers are mostly newcomers. They are clear
ing up their farms ahd tending to theirciws
and dairies. The only show for employment
is at the sawmills, and during the season em
ployment may be had at fishing, bu t generally
speaking, the men who come to this county
should come with the intention of taking up or
purchasing farms and making bonus.

POPULATION.
The population of Tillamook County is most
ly a rural population. It is estimated that it
amount* to about Five Thousand, of which
about two thirds is in the rural districts.
T owns .—Tillamook City, the county seat, has
a population of about 1000. It has all the bu. i-
ness houses usual to a town of its si*j mo t
of which carry large stocks of goods. The usu 1
shops, two good hotels and two newspapers.
The town has a fine system of waterworks and
an electric light plant. It has four churches,
a fine graded school and an excellent Academy
conducted by the Catholic Sisters of the order
of St. Cecilia and capable of imparting a
finished education. There is also a good private
school. Nehalem, Bay City, Beavar and Woods
are all flourishing villages,
HUNTING AND FISHING
For all kinds of sport, Tillamook is literally
the “Sportsman s Paradise.” All kinds of fish
and game abound. In the mountain forests, I
Elk, deer, bears and panthers abound, while
along the coast in the bays, ponds, lagoons and
sloughs wild fowl of all kind are to be found in
countless numbers. Ducks, geese, brent, plover,
snipe, rail and other waterfowl are here fr.m
October to April, and on the uplands and
iver bottoms rabbits, quail grouse and pheasant
are plentiful. All the streams literally sw^rm
with trout the year around and trolling for
salmon during the season is royal sport, the
catch being oftentimes enormous.
GOVERNMENT LANDS
There is still considerable government land
in this county open to homestead entry. This
land is to be found in the southern part of the
county in the burnt timber regions and in the
northern aud central portions. The laud is
mostly covered with excellent timber except
in the southern part of the county where it is
covered with brush and dead limber. This land
is mostly near good loads, and when cleaied
becomes at o..ce ve* y valuable for agr’cultural
and grazing purposes. Valuable timber claims
may also be had al points sufficiently near a
market to make them salable.
