Brief Description of ItsClimate
Resources etc.
Of all the counties of the State of Oregon there
is no other containing so much natural wealth
uoother offering so many inducements to the
«ettler and none so little known to the outside
world, as the county ofTUlamook. The fact of
its being little known to the outside world is
doubtless owing to mainly to its former
is »latiou and the fact that the real estate boo x er
lu» for some reason or other never found his
way to this neglected little paradise iu Western
Oregon.

CLIMATE
Situated as this county is washed by the waters
of the Pacific, tempered by the waters of the
Japan current its climate is exceptionally mild
and pleasant. The heat of summer is never ex-
cessive, the themometer rarely rising above 80
degrees. The nights arc always cool and
pleasant. In winter there is considerable rain,
but snow rarely falls and if it does it does not
remain on the ground, but ia soot# melted and
carried away by the warm rains. Grass giows,

green, the year round and stock requires but

little additional feed. Such a tiling as irrigation
it unheard ol and unknown.
The population of Tillamook County is most
ly a rural population. It is estimated that it
amounts to about Five Thousand, of which
about two thirds is in the rural district».
T owns .—Tillamook City, the c<-untv seat, has
a population of about rooo. It has all the bu i-
ness houses usual to a town of its siz? mo t
of which carry large stocks of goods The usu. 1
shops, two good hotels and two newspapers.
The town has a fine system of waterworks and
an electric light plant. It has four churches,
a fine graded school and au excellent Academy
conducted by the Catholic Sisters of the order
of St. Cecilia and capable of imparting a
finished education. There is also a good private
school. Nehalem, Bay City, Beavar and Woods
are all flourishing villages,
cedar mid hemlock have been scarcely touched
by the woodman’s axe, and, aside ft out the
comparatively small amount of lumber shipped
by the Nehalem mills and the Truckee Lumber
company at Hobsonville, only enough lumber
has been sawed for home consumption. Re
cently, additional mills have been established
in the county, and now Nehalem, Hobsonville
Netarts and Tillamook all have mills that are
engaged in shipping lumber to San Francisco,
It Is estimated that last years out put was as
much as 2o,ooo,o<xj feet. The Nehalem River i
a ml Tillamook Bay ate excellent harbors and
thete is a splendid opening for new mills at
both points.
But the principal industry of the county wil
doubtless always t>e
the excellence of the feed and the skill employed
by our dnirymen, Tillamook butter has become
fame us all over the coast and demands the
highest price in Che uiaikets. It is estimated
that the dairy product of this county amounted
1a«l year to 1000 ton*, valued at >500,000. There
are ten creameries In the county, and the dairy
man can either sell his milk to the creameries I
or make it into butter and cheese, Tillamook |
cheese haw a reputation equal to Tillamook .

of the supply. Good land suitable for dairying
and within easy reach of creameries can be pur
chased nt reasonable figures ranging at, from

Persons coming from the South will find the
trip overland, from San Francisco via the Ore
gon and California It It an exceedingly | leasant
one and from Portland to Forest Grove or
North Yamhill is only a short distance. From
both the last named points regular stages run
to Tillamook. Or if you prefer travelling by
water take the O R & N routes to Astoria and
there take the steamer for Tiilam ok. The ex
pense is about the same on all the lines and
is in the neighborhood of >5,00 to >6,co from Port
land to Tillamook.

LOCATION
The location of Tillamook County is favorable
both as to securing the best climate and trans
portation. It is bounded on the North by
< latsop County, east by Yamhill and Washing
ton Counties and South by Lincoln County.
The county is indented by several good natural
harbors. The Nehalem river, on the north,
forms a fairly good harbor and the Nestucca
river 011 the south and Netarts bay is equally
good Tillamook Bay is one of the best natural
harbors on the Pacific Coast. It is constantly
undergoing improvement at the hands of the
government. Being thus well supplied with sea
