THE TILLAMOOK
I Have Work tor You in Your Homo».
In the home of the long leafed yellow pine,
jn the balmy southeru forest, there lived at
young couple. In her maidenhood day» the
wifc had been a school ma am, but she had giv
en up her vocation to join as a helpmate, the
man of her choice.
He was a younger son in a large family, strong
and heathly, hardworking and proud. He had
entered a homestead in the woods when lie
wedded his bride. His only earthly possession
were his own honest, toiling hands, his fair de
voted helpmate and a stout little pony.
Bnt the young westenors were used to hard
living and toil from childhood, so. full of good
hopes for the future they started together as
their parents had done before them and suc
ceeded, and as it was always wont of the young
in their land to begin in life« race,
Ere long, to the humble household was add
ed a baby and with it illness, of the mother
and wife—lingering illness that now drained
every resource of the husband and tied heavy
doctor bills to the future work of his hands.
And another child yet came, and more illness
and the wife was no longer able to help bear
the burden. Hard times, too, such as had not
peen in the lifetime of these young people
crushed with an iron weight every effort to
rise to independence.
Then the wife saw In print and strengthened
with many references, the words which stand
at the head of this story, and with re-awakened
hope she scraped together the “first and only
outlay required to be admitted to the blessing
oi own and steady and pleasant work at home
and ample pay, The needed requisites obtain
ed, the first piece was wrought and sent away
for inspection. It returned with corrections
returned again, and again with several addi
tional 30c, charges for new pieces to try on and
with injunctions added to build up orders a-
mong friend as a basis for future employment.
Silently, at last, the pupil was dropped, but
perhaps to her teacher she had proven unable
to learn and he, out of sheer kindness, had
cut short the instructions—So we thought for
awhile and then we began to be sceptic.
Not many miles from the scene of the life
struggle related above, in a little northern col
ony there lived a poor widow with five children
to do for, some of which weie very young
while the rest did odd-jobs to help supply the
little mortgaged home.
The widow did washing for others, but her
health failed and when she saw the fine promise
of work, which could plainly not take as much
strength as the washtub and not likely be
more poorly paid—forth came the pennies, and
the widow entered the list of contestants
for a decent liviug.
But the widow hud friends—less sanguine
than she, and so a home talent of no mean
order 111 the widow’s place wrought out the
first effort and sent it away for correction.
Duly critized it retuned-pronounced faulty aud,
yet no person who examined the copy sent to
copy from together with the unsuccessful home
product but would candidly admit the letter

The Art of Eating.
I chi ) not dismiss the subject of break
fasts, luncheons, dinners and sappers
without a few hints on the necessity of
teaching children daintiness in table
manners, says a u'liter in “American
Women.” The young person is t<> be
sincerely pitied who has no careful moth
er, nurse or governess to attend to this in
childhood—that golden lime when learn
ing is so easy. Men and women are
judged by trifles.
After a rugged back
woodsman has hewn h's way to a high
place in the councils of the country, or
perhaps, saved it in hours of p'iril, one
may well forgive him if lie forgets the
right way to shake hands or doff his hat
or enter a drawing room. But even he
will be unforgiven if his table manners
are untidy or offensive. Just here the
most amiable of men, Thackeray, drew a
sharp line. “Oil,” he sighs, “if only the
dear American girls wouldn't strip tlie
corn with their white teeth!”
And
again: ‘'How could I breakfast with five
women eating with their knives? I could
have stood one—but five, all at once.”
