regard to the Tillamook trade, I observe that
the connection of my name with the subject
is looked upon favorably by some and differ
ently by others. I wish to say that my inten
tion« and efforts are exclusively for the public
and general good. As I have in the past exert
ed myself, and am now exerting myself, to
bring to this country thrifty and industrious
settlers from the East, so I shall andeavor to
bring about, so far as lies in my power, con
ditions that will enable these people to remain
here and to successfully carry on lawful and
honest business with the outside world. I
shall use every effort to prevent their being
“held up" by unreasonable exactions and in
efficient service in the way of transportation or
in any other line of business.
“T," who, in a recent article on this subject in
the Orevgouian, made indiscriminate use of my
name in the way of comment and compliment
is, to say the least, a capable and subtle writer.
The ‘ogical effect of his article is ail indirect
and covert insinuation against me as a priest of
the Catholic Church, to the effect that I am
only a great factor in the mundane welfare of
this community, without much solicitude for
the souls 6f athiests, infidels and sin nets. On
this subject, he ia not a competent judge, be
cause he docs not know my way of doing with
other athiests, infidelsand sinners, but he
ought to be able to remember the many con-
veisationf 1 have had with him in regard to the
soul, religion and justice; livw much time 1
have lost thereby, and how 1 have had to give
him up as a hopeless case.
I should like to see “T," who lives.ln our com
munity, be one with us in the interests of our
country, as against the selfish exactions of out
sider«, who, for the time being, control on
traffic with the outside world, and 1 should be
glad to k now that when he attempts to dis
courage Portland merchants by his prediction
