now quietly discussing the single
tax, the initiative and referendum
and features of this sort in the
hope that they may be able topre
sent new and attractive sclieiiie»
with which to catch the iiiitliink-
ing voter in the next iiutioiial
election.
That the customs collections
since the new tariff’ law went into
effect have been very light is, of
course, explained by the fact that
the importers had crowded into the
country all lhe foreign goods which
they could get in under the low
mritf rates of the Wilson law prior
to the enactment of the protective
measure now upon
the statute
books. Not only did they scour
I lie world for foreign manufactures
but they ransacked the bonded
warehouses, taking out lhe bonds
upon everything upon which the
new law increased the rates of
duty, 'this is shown by the recent
offiicial figures given the public at
Washington, which shows that
only $18,000,000 worth of goods
remained in the bonded ware
houses of the country at |he begin
ning of the month in which lhe
Dingley law went into effect, com
pared wilh more than $50,000,000
in those same warehouses one year
prior.

When the McKinley tariff of 1890 went
into operation there was
forthwith a
great outcry raised against it on
the
ground that it had resnhed in producing
a sharp increase In the cost of living. |

great leception to Senator McEnery on
his return home, to indorse his conduit
in supporting the
Republican
tariff,
which had dealt so liberally w ilh a great
Loilisana product. A good many Demo
crats in Congress who voted against
the bill on its final passage had been very
actively interested in helping to shape
certain protection features which con
cerned their own States or localities;
and their votes at the end were recorded
in the negative merely for the sake of
party form and consistency. They were
aware that the’bill would pass, and they
