GREAT HOLSTEIN COW.
A Black aud White That 1« a Famous
Hutter Maker.
The cow in the picture is a good il
lustration of how un American breeder
can take pure blooded old country stock
and improve ou it. The American Hol-
rtein-Friesian dairy cow is a different
animal from the raw boned, beefy ani-
mal that gave a large quantity of rather
thin milk a generution ago when speci
mens of the Dutch cattle were first im
ported into America.
The American black and white is a
unaller boned cow than her Holland an
cestor. She has the distinctive dairy

The butter interest of the entire coun
try should unite in a move on the next
congress for the euactment of a law pro
viding for a rigid government inspec
tion of all the butter and cheese sent
abroad. That is what is done in Den
mark. It is time that the progressive
itstesmanship of this country did some
thing practical and statesmanlike in
protecting our foreign dairy export trade
from the unconscionable and destructive
greed of swindlers and adulterators.
Such legislation would be greeted with
a universal acclaim of praise. Here is
the next good work to be taken up by
the Nationalist Dairy union in addition
to the securing of the passage of the
state trademark law now before con

To Kuow u Good Cow.
A subscriber wants to know the points
of a good cow, taking the Durham, for
instance, aud on what part of the body
they are to be found. It is rather hard
to put the points of a cow in cold type
no that they cun be seen and read of all
men. The dairy form is in direct con
trast to beef type. It is not in “roeeys, ”
thumb pits and thinness, but in a gener
al conformation to a type. Our inquirer
could probably distinguish between a
running horse and an animal of draft
build, und those breed types are no
more marked than between cows of a
dairy type and the beefers.
Without saying anything as to the
merits of breeds the Jersey cow stands
today as the general type of the dairy
cow, und all great performing cows of
whatever breed or family are but varia
tions of that form, without departing
far from it. And in bulls the same form
holds good, discarding blocky build,
flat backs and fleshy quarters for the
more bony build, muscular frame and
general all round feminine look—a
small, bony head, thin neck, pronounc
ed, sharp backbone, high hip, thin hams,
well placed and large developed udder,
sprung ribs aud a deep, rounded under
line, fore legs well placed apart to give
large heart and lung action, fine, silky
und oily hair, and a cow with good mo
tion and life, denoting strong uen e pow
er. The usual Durham cow is largely
built ou the beef lines, but there aie
notable exceptions, and the effort is be
ing made to build up a herd of milking
Shorthorns along the lines described,
and one herd in western New York is
an indication of what breeding for milk
alone will do iu changing the general
form of breeds.
The Guernsey Cattle club, Peterboro,
N. H., sends out a scale of points, free,
that comes as near embodying tiie correct
100 points iu dairy type as has been issu
ed aud are us applicable to all breeds,
common cows as well, as to the breed
for which they were drawn up as a form
of guidance. We wish to state that be
cause a cow haB this term it is uot a
certain thing that she will be a great
milker, only mote likely to be, just its
trotting horse blood and form are more
likely to coutaiu more trotters than all
forms aud no breeding. And, again,
cows are born to do certain things, and
their owners muy be of great assistance
to them to develop this gift On the
other hand, this man by bad feeding
and neglect can ruin any Lreediug or
gifts this heifer may be in the natural
possession of or after development.—
