OUR LAST LEGISLATURE.
E d . H eadlight :—Almost every
man knows tlm record of our last
legislature and can remember the
battle carried on by tlm republi
cans in their effort to elect a gold
standard mail for U.S. senator.
Many people believe that the light
was curried on in order to divert
the people's attention from the ex
travagant appropriations made.
You will please call to memory
that a huge majority of our last
legislature were republicans, many
of them if not all were pledged for
retrenchment mid promised to
abolish all useless boards and com
missions. Not a single one of their
pledged were kept except the re
tiring of Senator Dolph.
Even the Oregonian could not
refrain from expressing its approval
of a smaller majority of republi
cans in our legislature.
The lol-
lowing language was used by the
Oregonian:
“Possibly it may occur to the
people of Oregon to make n change
in the quality of mem whom they
send to the legislature.
Possibly
it would he bettor if a less propor
tion of them were members of a
single political party.”
I agree with tlm Oregonian in
that, and now that the election is
near at band, the people should

out of 90 members of our next leg
islature as they did two years ago.
Whenever one party gets too
strong,
many would-be leaders
arise, and in limit- scramble for
political prominence in their party
factions, they forget their prom
ises to tlm people and become tlie
tools of unscrupulous p-ilitieians.
Records are sometimes line things
to refer io, but I hardly think the
republicans will have the nerve to
refer to tlm records of our last leg
islature. It would hardly do to
recall to tlm minds of the taxpay
ers how hundreds of tliousmids of
dollars of tlm people's money was
appropriated for useless purposes,
and only one thing could be said
