the concurrence of the family, gives the
following statement to the press : Plaine
has been suffering some time with
symptoms which impaired his general
health, but which did not clearly indicate
a disease of any ¡»articular organ.
Evidences of local organic disease were
manifested recently, and it is lielieved
the present condition is due to this cause.
\\ bile there is nothing in the nature of
this disease to warrant a fear of any
rapid progress, he has shown within the
past month more signs of serious illness
than before

aggravation may pass off, but no positive
statement can be made as to the changes
which may take place from day to day.
At the present moment he is better than
fora week past. “Blaine is just a little
better, but no great change in his condi
tion this afternoon,” was said at the
house on inquiry.
W ashington , Dec. 18.—Jas. G. Blaine,
Jr., said to reporters at 6.30 th it* evening :
“We think that father is considerably
better than he was this morning, He was
dangerously ill during the fornoon. Dur
ing the afternoon he seems to have
rallied somewhat. The physicians have
l»een here this evening, ami we now
think that he will live throughout the
night, and we hope for the best; still, it
it must be sai«l that he is very daiigvr-
uusly ill.” These were the strongest
statements that h.vl yet been made by
the family or physicians as to the con-
dition of the ex-secretary. President
Harrison, accompanied by his Private
Secretary, Halford, walktsi over from the
White oouse to the ex-secret.try’s resi
dence this evening to pesuiially inqiure as

gratification at lieing informed that
there had been some abatement of the
more alarming symptoms. The excite
ment throughout the city was intense as
the news of Mr. Maine’s condition spread
and Sunday, though it was, the news
papers issued extras, which found a

R ichmond , Va., Dec. 19.—A novel
method was adopted to commit a double
murder in Henrico county. The crime
involves a story of a divorced man in
love with the wife of another, his love
reciprocated and the husband and Ids
best friend in the way of the full ami
complete enjoyment of the mutual attach
ment.
Seven miles west of Richmond, on
James River, then' have lived’ in the
same house for a few years three farmers
name<l Philip L. Nicholas, James Mills
and Judson Wilkinson. For some time
the relations of Nicholas, who was
divorced from his wife, and Mrs. Mills
were unduly intimate. Mills appeared
to think very highly of Nicholas.
I^ast Thursday when he and Wilkin
son were invited by .xicholas togo across
the river to cut a l»ee tree which he said
he had discovered Mills gladly aci epted

Not very long after the party left Nicholas
returned with his clothes soaking wet
