An Experimental Locomotive.
Tho cornets of what are called the
Hol in an-Cal d well patents are having
fitted up in Milwaukee a locomotive to
be equipped with a new style of running
gear, which its owners think will accom
plish great things in railroading. The
new running gear consists of a truck
with ten wheels, three of which on each
side rest upon tho rails, and are sur
mounted by two others, the tires of
which have frictional contact with the
tin*« of tho wheels below. Then sur
mounting these two wheels is tho drive
wheel of tho locomotive, the wheel ar
rangement on each side Ix’ing that of a
pyramid, with tho drive wheel on top.
As the lower sets of wheels are of
much smaller diameter than the drive
wheels which transmit motion to them
it is claimed that the ordinary speed of
a locomotive can bo doubled by the use
of this gearing. A stock company has

Often a young man has written two
letters at tho same time and then.placed
them in the wrong envelopes, but the
latest break of this kind was made by
one of tho prettiest girls in Louisville.
She wrote a letter to her brother, who is
at Knoxville, and at tho same time a let
ter to a well known young newspaper
mam The envelope directed to the lat
ter contained a letter beginning “Dear
Brother.” At first the recipient of tho
epistle did not think this strange, as tho
young lady, although living in the city,
is boarding at one of the female schools.
After reading a few line« he saw it was
not intended for him. Looking at the
end ho eaw tho letter was signed “Your
Little Sister.” This alarmed him and lie
began to think how he could get the girl
out of tho scrape.
Finally he lost his bead and did the
very thing he should not have done. He
telegraphed the brother not to open the
letter, that it was not intended for him.
This had just the opposite effect, and the
brother opened it, read it through and
then forwarded it to his parents. The
young lady is being sent to school to
keep her away from this aspiring young
journalist. The father paid him a call
and a stormy scene was the result. The
young lady's letters have to go through
tho hands of tho teacher now. In spite
of thia sbo has managed to get a letter to
him, and ho has written an answer that
has reached its destination, proving that

Ono of tbo most remarkable human

by JI. <le Qu.iln fagjw, tho French natur

Aiguier, and is 30 years old. Aiguier,
tlianks to his peculiar system of muscles
and nerves, can transform himself in
most wondrous fashion.

of a statue, his body may bo struck

projects it forward, which gives him the
ipfiearanco of a colossally stout p-Tson-
age.
He then withdraws it into the tlyirax,
opening like a cave, and the hollow look
of his body i.umediately reminds one of
i skeleton.
Aiguier successfully imi
tates a man subjected to the tortures of
the rack, as also a man hanging himself,
and assumes a strikingly cadaverous
look.

Ono of the most wonderful freaks of
nature the world has ever known is now
attracting attention iu St. Paul, and
Spokane Falls figures as tho central fig
ure in the phenomenon. It is no less
than a horse that bears in its left eye a
perfect picture of tho waterfall at Spo
kane Falls. The eye has been seen and
examined by hundreds of persons, and
clow iy com;Kired by them with photo
graphs and other pictures of tho falls, 1
and no one Inis yet failet^to pronounce it ,

In discussing tho matter with a re
porter Mr. Dillman said:
“Mr. Deokiu sent the horse down to
the hotel where I stopped in order that I '
might see him. The horse is white in
color and of medium size. I was some
what skeptical about tho story until I
looked into the animal's left eye, when I
beheld a perfect reproduction of a part
of the falls of tho Spokano river as true
to life as the best photographs.
“The part of the falls shown ia from
tho water works across to the mills. The
island on which tho water works stand
is also shown. The picture is alxsolutely
perfect in every detail. Tho horse was [
sold in St. Panl witii a numlicr of other
horses, ami the wonderful picture in his
eye was not discovered until after ho i
had passed into tho poasessiuu of Mr.
Deakin.
“Hundreds of people have viowed the
horse, and Mr. Deakin has received un
offer of $7,000 for him, which he prompt
ly refused. He also received a flattering ’
