WHEN MY OREAM COMES
r
ON.
Oh, when my drcam cornea on I hoar
Voices of master singers fill
The hollow heaven and flood the sphere,
And hold the wild sea »till.
gome spotless hero riding down.
To do or die at battle dawn,
Clothes me In honor and renown
Like Bayard's, when my dream comes on
My dream comes on, and to! the scope
Of life expands ufrl brims all «[.ace
With truth, with freedom's hope,
And measureless sweetness of God's grace;
All hate goes out, all love comes In,
All cowardice and fear are gone;
There is no room for fault or sin,
Or sorrow, when my dream comes on.
My dream comes on and Alls my soul
With visions like the sky and wa;
Aloft, On highest height s, the goal
Is set to mark my destiny
My destiny I n freedom's oh n.
My life to ampler life Li drawn.
To love's ideal stature grown
I triumph when my dream conics on.
My dream comes on: all, let mo dream.
Let no rude souml my vision break.
Until the morn begins to gleam,
And all the future's song birds wake;
For 1 am happy while I keep
This sense of lapsing into dawn
Ou some sweet current, swift mid deep
And odorous, when my dream comes oni

Tin» Steel Malileu.
Nuremberg, “tin cradle of invention,"
the birthplace of the watch and many
other useful mechanical devices, was not
alone the home of that w hich most is
useful and helpful to mankind. Among
some of her achievements are the most
horrible instruments of torture ever used
by the inquisitors of the Middle Ages,
chief among which might be mentioned
the “steel maiden." The maiden is now
kept in one of the upper rooms of the
town hall and shown to visitors as a
curiosity.
At first sight one is apt to taka it for a
gigantic stntuo of a woman, clumsily
hewn out of wood. Closer investigation
discovers two d'jors. one swinging to the
right und the other to the left. These
ejam noiselessly and reveal the fact that
the statue is hollow, the cavity being
alxnit the exact size of the average man.
Inside are straps by which the offender
was laiund so tightly that he could not
move limb or muscle. Eotliof tliediairs
are lined with long, sharp steel spikes,
strong and thick. When the victim was
firmly secured the door on the left was
slowly but firmly shut, th? long spikes
going into his laxly, two being so ar
ratiged as to pierce his eyes.
Then the disir on the right was closed
in a similar maimer, wherenixni he would
receive unoiher complement of Bpikes.

Death did not come until the last spike
was driven through a hole in the iloor

Th. Dark, of ths Rice Eletds.
It is of the rice fields of the tide lands
of the Georgia and Carolina coast, and of
the adjacent islands, that we would
speak
To those who have never been
among them these rice plantations would
»fiord much that is both novel and inter
esting. This evergreen region, where
the plaintive notes of the whippoorwill
and song of the sweet throated mocking
bird float up through the moss covered
tr.'in, and negroes, fever and ague, rice
bir<lsand alligators abound, would indeed
seem to be a new world to our northern
brethren, and the picturesque effects
charm the eye of the stranger artist
The rice field darky is himself a dis
tinct type, totally different in both as
pect and dialect from the negroes of the
interior; and a not uninteresting sight is
the force, as with shout and song they
take their way along the embankment
to the rice field. Their ancestors for
generations buck, or us they would tell
you, "mi furraran’ uii grunfnrrar,” huve
lived und labored in these malarial re
gions, and they ncccpt chill anil fever
and other infelicities incident to these
localities as unavoidable' evils, plodding
on with no higher aim nor hope, careless
for the future and uot over anxious for
the present.
The cost of living is small, as not
many nor very warm garments are con
sidered necessary, und the rice field
darky's ideas of n wardrobe are ex
tremely limit« 1. from both blissful igno
rance and choice. Fish and gutne are
plentiful, nnd i.i these regions a heavy
diet is to be indulged in only at great
risk.—L. \V. Roberta in Popular Science.
