Tito vexing n i linn ”h vexed question,
What is tiie k<al definition of a bay
window? ree-r.s to lie drawing toward u
solution. “How many window, shall a
bay window contain?” is the point made.
These windows are all built of frame,
and the difficulty with the insjiectorH 1.x
to keep build r i from overstepping tlieir
legal rights mi l constructing frame
back buildings under the disguise of
“Lay windows.“ The claim is made
that a bay window must bo all windows
•—that is, windows on tho front and
sides: others think that a window on the
front la all that is necessary. The lat
ter view is taken by tho builders of
houses in rows whore the bay windows
of adjoining houses are so close as to
prevent the possibility of privacy.
One builder who is building a row of
houses in the upper section of the
city thinks the la v is doing him a
wrong by compelling him to put three
windows in bin bay windows, which ad
join each other in pairs, divided by a
brick wall. II? is n it expected to put a
window in the brick wall, but in the
framework iqq,« site, adding to the ex
pense of the -house and altering the
shape of tho room. The main reason
for compelling builders to construct
windows on nil sides of the bay is pre
vention against fire. This argument is
answered by the builders, who say that
the frame apartments having tho least
number of windows bum tho slowest.
When svindows become broken the
draught is greatly increased, conse
quently the danger is aggravated. To
the looseness of tho building laws many
of the complii itions constantly arising
can b<< attributed. Tho ordinance of
1882 to r< gnluto the erection of oriel or
bay windows throws no light whatever
on tho subject. While the ordinance
regulates the construction of front bay
windows, not a word is said about tlioso ,
on the rear of buildings.—Philadelphia
Inquirer.
