A Gold Brick Swindle.
An tmufual ec : tiement cf n criminal
case was effected Juno CO in the euperi >r
court at East Cambridge. It was tho
fiunoua gold brick bunco case which oc
curred in Lowell in 18-s3. by which two
Nev/ York swindlers and a local accom
plice euchred Mr. Geurgo F. Penniman
out of $9,000. The accomplice, named
Che >’■ r A. Grinnell, was captured, but
his confederates escaped. Grinnell was
subsequently released on |18,000 bail,
which v.-as furnished by Lador J. and
Isaac Klous. When the case was called
in court the defendant failed to put in
an appearance. Ilis bondsmen were in
dict; 1 by tho grand jury in June, and
app-ird in czr.irt with two certified
checks of $0,009 each, with one of which
they offered to reimburse Mr. Penniman
and the other they tendered to tho court
in Eettlement of the case ji gain st them.
Justice Bishop took tho projfosition un
der consideration nnd rendered his de
cision by the following order:
“In tho abovo action the penalty
nan I in the r.•cognizance is adjudged
forfeited and jinlgm. nt entero.! for $18,-
0(H), tho amount stated in said recog
nizance. Execution is to be stayed un
til July 15, 1*00, and sh ill then issue for
.?iid ; um, without intercut or costs; pro-
vi 1 id, however, that an acknowledg
ment for the sum of $9,000, signed by
George F. Penniman for account of his
claim again st Chester A. Grinnell, ono
of tho defendants, by way of satisfac
tion, shall be filed with tlie clerk of tho
court in this cause before said clay; exe
