/ T he S ilverton J ournal 3X. VOL IV. SILVERTON, OREGON, FRIDAY, MARCH 19, 1915 No. 20. PAPAL NOTES THE DARK AGES By L. D. Ratliff I. The lust legislature appropriated |138,U00 public money to uid Private Institutions. A lurge purt of it goes to Catholic Sectarian Institutions, like thu H use of Good Shepherd at Portland, and the Christie Orphanage ut Oswego. The former, it is under stood, is simply a work-shop, or slave-pen, a sort of semi-penal In stitution where girls aro worked for private gain, with no pay except their keep (which is paid for by the Stute). The luttet claims to l>e a school, but is said to be of the reg ular runk Catholic order where all must submit to the stunts of the superstition. As a basis for public favor, and State uid, the two insti tutions claim un avrrug«1 of from 260 to .360 inmutes. Dependent girls from .6 to 16 are picked up from all over ^thc State and sent to thess places, the Juvenile Court of Marion County having n hand in the gam«1. Each ad«litional victim m«*ans additional aid, and at the H. O. G. 8., addition- al work, and udditionul profits. To be sure, this is all in violation of the spirit of the State Constitution which says, "No money shall be drawn from the treasury for the ben efit of any religious institution.” But by naming one an “Orphanage," an«! an other “Home for Wayward Girls,' ) ft these sectarian institutions get the rake-off. If the victims were all Catholic girls, the thing would still be ex- cusable, but since many of them are non-Catholic, it is simply infamous to thus subject them in their tender years to a soul-debasing superstition nn<l treuson-inspiring devotion to a foreign blasphemous pretender. • • • “I p!«*dg • and swear true obedience to the Romar. Pontiff. Vicar of Jesus Christ." — Oath of allegianc«- by a’atholic Council at Baltimore, 1884. • • • Wisconsin Republicans have started a presidential boom for ex-president Taft. No use, gentlemen! Too much Romanism in him. • • • “He wl.o sins carnally when car rying holy relics does not commit any sacrilege." — Manuel of the Priest, Prin. Ill, 463. — Seguin. By press report, March 10, Card. Gibbons said he had “advised” the government to int«Tvene in Mexico. The archbishop means "Mr. D. Cheisa of Rome,” etc. • • • In Buffalo, N. Do you like it? • • • An immigration Bill has four times passed the house, and five times passed the Senate, yet President Wil son said there was no evidence the people wanted it — the Hierarchy opposed it. • • • Of the 136 congressmen who voted against the Immigration Bill, 72 are Knights of Columbus, 48 of whom were defeated at the last election. Some more of the 136 will likely drop out the next round. • • • “Well, Bridget,” said the priest, “have you thought about anything had since your last confession?’’ “No, Father, nothing except what you told me when I was here last time." • • • The eay graft, ready access to the Temple Girls (of the convent), hav ing all secrets common with all the loyal ladies of the parish — these naturaly furnish a motive to a cer- tain brand of young men to go into the priesthood. • • Any institution which cannot en- dure criticism is too rotten for the 20th century. This is why the Ro- man Catholic Hierarchy and Knights of Columbus rush to the courts, and to congrer.n, and to the Postoffice de partment, and resort to mobs and murder to avoid criticism.
