OUR HOLY LORD GOD THE POPE hi . . If the pope before his election, has been guilty of crime, and goes into office without giving the public some kind of notice that he has repented, and reformed, or if he commits crime after his consecration, what is the ef fect upon his official character and standing? Remember that the pope has a threefold ’character to main tain, as a man, as a civil ruler, having actual authority, or claiming it, and as a professed teacher of religion. If, as a man and a civil ruler, he has been, and is, personally vile and rot ten, how can he be, in any sense, a suitable person to officiate as a re ligious teacher, not to speak of en throning him as supreme teacher of Religion for all the people of the earth ? There, Brother, Neighbor, Fellow Citizen of this American Na tion, there is the question that is up to you to consider today. If the “Head” of the church is per- sonal'y unholy, how “holy" is the church itself likely to be? And that church whose “head” has served an apprenticeship to the devil, and is now doing journeyman work for him, is that church in any sense, a church of God at all? In fact, on Roman ist principles, or on any kind of prin ciples. is there any “church" in ex istence, during the time a wicked man holds the office of pope? Will some priest speak up, and tell us w) ere his “church” is, when his pope is gone to the devil? It will do no good to howl—“bigotry"— “persecution”, and perpetuate a lot of cussin, like the alleged pope Peter did, when he was asked a question he didn’t like to an swer. It is said that “Charity covers a multitude of sins.” But the state ment as made in Scripture, suggests that the sins may be so big in size, and so many In number, that Mother Charity’s mantle can’t be streached enough to get all the sins well under cover. Pope Leo 13 the paternal an cestor of cardinal Satolli, found i' that way, as his underlings, cardinal Newman, Dr Alzog, Dr. Pastor, and a herd of others, have found, to their discomfuture. They have found, and have been compelled to acknowledge that many, very many, of the “infall ible” popes have been bad, VERY BAD. Now very seriously, neighbor —Where had the Church of Rome got to, when its “head” was tucked under the head of Beelzebub, and things were sizzling, and they were getting ready for company in the hot coun try? It sounds very big when a scurvy old sinner is dubbed “infalli ble", but Satan isn’t scared from his property by any such name as that. Does any one ask: “Have any of the popes been such characters as are here described?” Let facts be submitted to a candid world. We have heretofore mentioned the facts that many times, two persons at a time, have claimed to be in the line of the “infallibles”. And sometimes three persons, and one time, four per sons, at the same time claimed to be THE pope, the only, and simon pure article. We named Benedict 9 who took office in A. D. 1033, and who sold the office for the honor of a woman. We named John 12., A. D. 955, who by means of circumstances in the personal conduct of his ances tors, both the parental and the mater nal, had relationships that do not come to the lot of the ordinary man. John was his own half brother, and his own uncle; and his esteemed mother was at the same time his hon ored grandmother. And he was wor thy of his breeding, and suddeny de parted this life in consequence of be ing found, with company, in another man’s bedchamber. He filled the of fice for nine or ten years. Where was the church during that time? John had other faults beside those indicated. Now beginning with A. D. 955, and counting the popes to Pius 6, 1774, out of the 125 men who occupied the office during that time, for each of whom Rome claims “in fallibility”, and each of whom was named "His Holiness”, there were thirty men who, during their lifetime and by associates of their own so- called “faith”(save the mark.)-thirty men who were known and recorded as MURDERERS. Remember, this takes no account of any wars an/ of these may have waged as civil rulers; nor of any complicity they mey have sustained as to wars between other rulers or states. O yes— Our Lords and Go.D, the popes, have certainly been “Holy”. “L”
