PAPAL NOTES
STICKERS
A Roman Trick to destroy the free
school idea and secure public mon
ey for the already Romanized dis
trict has been defeated. Hurrah! !
Some time ago the Catholic trick
sters at Mt. Angel made an attempt
to take in the adjoining school dis
tricts and thus receive the public
school money from all of them and then
make the whole business Roman Cath
olic. But the surrounding districts
objected and fought like tigers, with
the result that the Mt. Angel Daddies
were sorely beaten. Th's defeat of
the Angels was not enough, however,
and last Friday was appointed for
another “try out” in the Circuit Court
room at Salem. The reporter of The
Silverton Journal was on hand prompt
ly, and quite a little amy of rural
folks, who love the “little red school
house” more than they do the paro
chial farce, were up in arms and right
to the front. And what do you sup
pose happened? Just exactly what
always happens when people face a
cowardly enemy. The “Angels” never
showed up. They simply withdrew
their case, and it is thereby proven,
what we have so often contended, that
the priesthood dare not face a fair
fight. They hate publicity. They do
not want people to know the truth.
Intrigue, deceit, fraud, illegal boycott
and fear are the weapons they use,
but when patriotic people unite and
face them, they slink away into their
underground dens of infamy, and,
like a huge spider again watch for
their careless prey.
It would be interesting to know
how much of the principal’s salary in
Catholic towns like Mt. Angel goes
to the priests and how much the other
teachers pay the priests in order to
get and hold their jobs. The principal
at Mt. Angel gets $125 per month and
has eleven stadents in his room, while
the Catholic parochial schools are
boomed, boosted and increased. Why
should our public schools be ruined
and these special, stultifying, Roman
izing institutions be supported by
money drawn for public school pur
poses ? There are some things besides
the saloons in Mt. Angel which should
be prohibited, and a few more at
tempts like the one that failed last
Friday with a free press to make it
public will certainly do the business.
Hurrah for the bold yeomen whose
bravery won a great victory last Fri
day without striking a blow. Hurrah
for our public schools and the prin
ciples of democracy which are at last
making it possible through free and
liberal education to build us a world
without a slave, a knave or a priest-
ridden fool.
CHALLENGE ACCEPTED
In The Silverton Journal of January
1st, Mr. Van Trump has this challenge:
“I will give Mr. Phelps $100.00 to
prove before a Christian jury that Lin.
coin ever acknowledged Christ as Sa
vior, or joined any ^turch. Now we
will see who is the bluffer.”
Taking it for granted that Mr. Van
Trump is not bluffing in this matter,
I will prove to a Christian jury in
Philcsnath, Oregon, consisting of six
or twelve persons, that Mr. Lincoln
was
First: A man of prayer.
Second: That he believed the Bible
as the inspired word of God.
Third: That he believed Christ was
Divine in the fullest sense of the word.
Fourth:
That he acknowledged
Christ as the Savior of all men.
Fifth: That he claimed to be con
verted.
Sixth: That he stood upon the Bible
as his foundation of morality.
Seventh: That he acknowledged
Christ as h;s own Savior as well as the
Savior of the world.
Here is a fair chance to settle this
point, at least locally.
What I have stated in the above
propositions I will undertake to prove,
as soon as Mr. Van Trump informs me
that he has deposited the hundred dol
lars. I will take any bank he may
name just so I have it in writing from
the one holding the forfeit that the
hundred dollars have been deposited
for and in harmony with, the challenge
of Mr. Van Trump. Mr. Van Trump
may be present, if he so desires, and
present his side of the ease with equal
time as myself. Now we will see by
what hole he will get out of this.
Like Cantrell, he may have to go east.
Respectfully submitted,
GUY FITCH PHELPS.
