Then with the money we earn ourselves, with our own name on it, money which will be of no use to any one else, the abnormal love of the present day kind of money, whicîi comes from the blood thirsty greed-appetite created in our still savage minds by overpowering our fellow man through shrewdness, deception ; and other brute instincts still lingering in the human soul, will pass away, and with the root dead the tree of evil will die and we will have learned the great lesson, which Jesus endeavored to pound into our fool heads two thousand years ago, that we love one another. T D 0 YOU BELIEVE THE SCRIPTUPvE STATEMENT, “the love of money is the root of all evil”? If you de, listen! War is an evil, and if the love of money is the root of all evil it must be the root of the War in Mexico. The Saloon system is an evil and if the love of money is the root of all evil the root of the saloon system must be the love of money. The white slave traffic is an awful evil and for the same reason as before the root of this evil must be the love of money. And so it is with the long category of greater and lesser evils. Now if this root of evil could be destroyed, evil would die. But how can we destroy the love of money without destroying this civilization’s very use ful and almost necessary medium of exchange? What causes people to love money so much as to engage in evil in order to secure it? Is it not caused by the wrong methods used in securing it? Money obtained by labor alone does not create such an abnormal love for it as is seen in those who get it in other ways. When money begins to create money then comes the love of it and the root of all evil (love of money) can be destroyed by destroying its power to multiply itself. By destroying this power we would very much increase the reward for labor, thus increasing the love of labor and entirely destroy the love of money itself. Money now begets money through interest, rent and profit. To destroy the root of all evil money must be made non transferable and only secured through labor. In this way and in this way only will wars cease, the saloons and brothels and gambl ing dens and white slave pens and priestly traps and penitentaries and high taxes and mob violence and armies of unemployed and hold up’s and cowardly newspaper men and injunctions and bull pens and black lists—The wrong methods of getting money has created an awful abnormal love for it and this love is the root of all evil. Let labor get its full reward. Let all produce or help in production for use and not for profit. Destroy the root and the tree and its forbidden fruit will wither away and die. To destroy interest, rent and profit looks like an impossibility to some, but it is the simplest and easiest thing in the world and some day people will wonder why we allowed these foolish ferti lizers of the root of all evil to exist. Besides if they are not de stroyed and if money is not made nontransferable our civilization will be destroyed and the whole world made transferable into such a hell of waring individuals, corporations and countries that peace and plenty, love and liberty will never come. Let the people have direct control of the government; let them be the government, and then let them own and operate all the means of production and each get the full social product of his $3000 for an 8-room houae, barn, one acre orchard, barriea, garden, on weat aide Water atreet; $1000 down; terma to auit. $3400 for a atrictly modern <> room, basement, bath, toilet, 1' ( acres, or chard, berriea, garden, lawn; about half down. $3000—Nine-room reaidence, close in. THE GREATEST SERMON HERE WAS ONE OF THE GREATEST, if not the great ist, sermons recently preached in Silverton that ever was de livered any where. It was at the Gem Theatre, ami was in the form of moving pictures. The subject was “Satan” and we feel sure that there would have been a much larger crowd present if the people had known what was coming. Everybody should have been there. The mythical and tradi tional fall of the Angel and his Adam and Eve temptation stunt was good, but the parts that were best as a sermon was the Devil’s part and the result shown in the invention of murderous weapons, the discovery of absinthe, of fermented liquors, and his Satanic’s role in modern society. O, it was simply great! But we understand that there were some present who did not like it j very well—wonder why. But every lover of truth and right ought to take a hand in throwing that Satan Movie on the screen again in Silverton and . in every other city in the world where his hellish work is still going on. Ministers, teachers, intelligent citizens, officials, you’d better look into this great educational picture business and see that | more of our people see it. What can we do? Please do not pass i the question lightly for truly it is one of the greatest pictures ever i seen by a sin cursed world.___________________ T H. E. BROWN BOX 145 SILVERTON, OREGON WAR AND WAR. HE WAR IN MEXICO is a war for the benefit of Capital and Capital’s Champion, Catholicism. It is not for the benefit of the working men and women of the United States nor out of pity for the poor slaves of Mexico. But its object will be defeated. It will not detract as such wars have before from the great war that is actually going on here in dear old Uncle Sam’s own home country And do you know that it has been rumored that an actual war between labor and capital is seriously talked of right now. We hope it can be avoided but the conditions are actually serious. There is in this country a large class of workers who believe in “direct action,” and if at any time they should see fit to raise an army and declare actual war against the capitalist class it would throw our beloved country into worse condition than exists now in Mexico. Property and lives by the millions would be lost and it would take years and years to recover from the awful plunder, ravage and murder. This is no dream. In fact we hear rumors T young, active, well poster I. W. W. said to us in a private argue- nient for and against direct action. He said that one must “learn to put the cold steel into the heart of a capitalist if necessary ami do it with a smile.” We said, “you don’t mean that; why that would be horrible murder.” Our young friend then become excit ed and asked, “what are the capitalists doing but murdering, and worse than murdering, hundreds and millions of the workers ail the time?” “But you mean Capitalism and not individual capitalist ;.” said we. “It will do more harm than good to start killr.g people. We must change conditions with the ballot and then things will be better, but the use of murderous brute force only makes brutes, and brutes of one kind are no more fit for a condition of liberty than another.” But there is danger from this idea as in French Revolutionary times. Truly has the poet said "a time like this demands great hearts, strong minds, true faith and willing hands!” of the organization of such an army and of the preparation of frightened capital. The spirit of revolt is best shown by what a
