Silverton Socialist Local
O HEAR SOME PEOPLE HOWL about the lazy unemploy
ed, one would almost think that its a crime not to work for
nothing and board yourself, if somebody should ask you to
do so. Why, some fellow says that he once worked for 50
cents a day, and talks as though he thought that was smart, but
if the government would fix the scale of wages at a living rate, not
let anyone work for less, and give all men work at this minimum
rate, there would be no army of the unemployed excepting the lazy
rich who refuse to work at any rate of wages, and who like their
hobo brothers have learned that there’s a way to make a living
without work. They are both parasites, but of these two bugs the
hobo has the best excuse for living off his fellows. Many of them
were born of over worked mothers and are constitutionally and
mentally unfit to work. Many have worked their minds and
muscles to the limit, and just can’t force themself to go through
the motions any longer. Many of these hobos are sujierior in in
tellect and often in education to their millionaire brothers, but like
them they will not labor—they don’t have to; they can live without
work.
There is a remedy for this sick condition of our beloved country
in which the workers are burdened with supporting this great
army of the unemployed and other things too numerous to men
tion. It is to alter or abolish a government in which the supreme
court has usurped the rights belonging to the people and have set
themselves up as absolute monarchs, interpreting our constitution
in any old way they see fit—it is to alter or abolish a government
T
MOVE IN RIGHT DIRECTION.
HE SOCIALISTS of Salem seem to have struck the key note
and we hope that every Protestant church and every
fraternal society will catch the idea and that everyone who
believes that something ought to be done to check up the
abominable slavery that exists in the Roman institutions will
push the good work along until none of our tax money H squan
dered by fake parochial schools, untill slavery, white slavery and
even murder is not committed under the cover of religion and
when American girls for slight cflenses will not be committed to
Catholic or any other private institutions by our magistrates.
The Salem Socialist Local has instructed their delegate to in
troduce the following resolution in the State Convention of the
Socialist Party of Oregon :
“No public funds secured by taxation or otherwise should be
appropriated to private institutions.
“We favor the public inspection and supervision of all institu
tions, both public and private, in which people are detained or
cared for.
“We would forbid the commitment of offenders by any
magistrate or court to any private institution.”
Every anti-Catholic should not only say amen but should roll
up his or her sleeves'rmd go to work until Oregon is free from the
tryanny of the under ground criminal institution brazenly claming
to be the orginal and only true church.
