The papacy will step to the front, claiming to be the only power that can handle the complex situation and the turbulent difficulties that have been produce«! in the world. She is making and will continue to make the claim that these perplexing condition.- have been produced b«?cauxe she was dethroned, ami finally the whole world will fall in line with he** The political world is now afraid of her. There is not a nation on earth, not even excepting the United States, but that reckons with her power; and many decisions are made contrary to the best judgment of those who are acting, and all tx*cause of the fear of giving offense to Rome. The world is headed strongly toward a great uni versal religious despotism, and of course all religious despotisms must ride into power and maintain their su premacy through dominating the state as well as the church.—Ex. THE UNITARIAN GOSPEL. The Unitarian gospel is primarily a gospel of reason and common sense. It appeals to man’s mind and intelli gence, as well as to his heart and con science. Thousands of honest and sin cere people the world over have left the orth«>dox church, seeking and hop ing to realize those higher realities which religion alone can give. Ortho doxy, with its elements of fear and superstition, evidently has failed in these lives, ami instead of helping men to find the life-giving wells of truth, instead of helping men to realize the fair hope and promise of Christianity as taught and lived by Jesus, it has driven men and women into atheism and materialistic scepticism and unbe lief, and has declared her anathema upon the unfortunate of her own cre ating. Thousands of men today have lost faith, not in religion, not in Jesus, not in his gospel or in the deeper spiritual things of life, but in the creeds and dogmas of the church, in the supersti tions of mediaeval speculation and theologizings, in the absurdities of the miraculous and supernatural. To all of this large class Unitarianism has a rrn ss&ge '.«d a reasonable hope. Com«- to W. O. W. hall Sunday e«- ening at 7:45 and hear more or this •message. Rev. Richard F. Tischer, minister of the Unitarian church, of Salem, will preach. A UNITARIAN. DRIFTED IN. All kinds of things drift into the western cities and Silverton is no ex ception. Probably the majority of our population came from states east of the Rocky mountains, and it would be impossible to expect that all who come would have wings, at least until they have been here for a few years. A re cent arrival illustrates the point very nicely. A man( ?) who is said to be worth at least $50,000, induced a hard-work ing widow of Minnesota, to give away all the property she had to her chil dren and his children, and to come to this land of happiness with him. He represented that he had plenty of money for both of them, and so the lonesome lady gave up a go«xi pax ing boarding house business and with her gallant lover, hastens to the golden west. But after living like pigs in a dirty pen, the good lady finally wakes up to the fact that the honeymoon is at an end. She wants a home of her own and one fit and congenial, with not too much of a mix-up with other neople, and so the courts of Oregon are kept busy testing out these trou bles which come to us over the moun tains—troubles which we find are very similar to those bom in this state over deception, the drink habit, neglect, matrimony and matters of money. THE OLD TRICK OF SMOTHER. The Catholics evidently were not ready to tackle The Silverton Journal an«l their game is now to smother us. So they failed to set the $50,000 case until it was too late for the last term of court, and the work of scattering lies and telling truths and part truths in such a way as to deceive our friends and to inflame our enemies Is going on nicely. These tactics put us into con fusion. We don’t know what to say. for they may spring the case on to us at the next term of court in April, after getting us off our guard and at a time when we are not as well prepared as when we thought the case was to come to issue at once. Many of our friends of course think it strange that the big case we had advertised as com ing off at once, has not vet been tried, and they have no way ot knowing that it is one of the smart games of the enemy. All this is unsatisfactory and the “cats’ know it and know that this smothering tactics is the very hardest blow they can give us under the condi tions, but. dear friends of liberty, be not deceived by false reports. Don’t let them smother us, and if we can keep alive and can get a hearing with the good people of this great republic, there will be something doing in the camp of America’s worst enemy be fore another year rolls around. Help us live and breathe. Help us get a hearing. Help us get the truth to the people of these United States. Up and at ’em I
