Founder says goodbye to the paper

not think it would be approved
if all students were included.
Some people never did un-
derstand our opposition and
asked why we wanted to let
kids use drugs. I still oppose
such a policy because I believe
students should be treated like
anyone else; if they are sus-
pected of using drugs, investi-
gate, otherwise, stop treating
them like suspects.
Most news isn’t earth-shat-
tering, but that doesn’t mean
it’s unimportant. Birth an-
nouncements, weddings and
anniversaries, church services,
community celebrations, meet-
ing notices and more are im-
portant to the people involved.
I will always remain im-
pressed with the wonderful lo-
cal people who contributed so
much to develop the sense of
who we are with cartoons,
columns on cooking, library ac-
tivities, hunting and fishing,
health, gardening, schools and
so much other information.
They have all enriched my life.
Running a newspaper in a
small town can be difficult if you
are honest enough to report
what what is happening. Re-
porting the good things is fun,
but the rest of it can be boring
or disturbing or maddening or
heart-breaking.
It is unbelievably stressful
when you have to report some-
thing negative about people
you know, even more so when
others don’t want certain infor-
mation made public. Honesty is
required, but we can’t forget
that the people involved in what
we report are our neighbors.
I have been fortunate to be
able to work with my late hus-
bands, Dana McGaugh, a
tough editor and reporter, and
Dirk Andersen, who retired
from teaching then spent many
years working on The Indepen-
dent. And I have been truly
blessed with the opportunity to
work with my son and daugh-
ter-in-law, Clark and Rebecca
McGaugh, who also let me
write whatever I wanted to in
my own column.
It’s been a great run, and I’m
still Out of My Mind…
