Affair by Michael Kardos, which
begins with three friends mak-
ing a routine stop at a conven-
ience store. When, moments af-
ter entering the store, one of the
men emerges dragging a young
woman with him as he shoves
her in their car and shouts:
“Drive!” Suddenly these three
men are holding a frightened
girl hostage without the slight-

He enjoyed the outdoors,
fishing, hunting, camping,
cooking, eating, watching
birds, and gardening. He was
an avid Duck fan and a dog
lover.

by a grandson.
Survivors include his wife;
four stepchildren; Patricia
Gyles of Tigard, Randall Gyles
of Pueblo, Colorado, Vickie
Metzger of Portland, and Bar-
bara Cecil of Sherwood; three
siblings, Gerald Hawthorne of
Portland, Gale Hawthorne of
Tigard, and Linda Summers of
Sandy; nine grandchildren and
three great-grandchildren.

Hart. When she was in the
fourth grade, the family moved
to Hood River. She graduated
from Hood River High School in
1959, then attended Taft Junior
College in Taft, California,
where she earned an associ-
ate’s degree. She then attend-
ed Oregon State University to
study Social Sciences.
In 1964, she married Lloyd
Mills. They made their home in
Corvallis, Amity and Gresham,
before moving to Forest Grove
in 1969.
She enjoyed flower arrang-
ing, cooking, sharing recipes,
and traveling.
She was preceded in death
by a brother, Henry Hart.
Survivors include her hus-
band; two sons, Larry Mills of
Nampa, Idaho, and Gary Mills
of Tigard; one daughter, Tricia
Hinds of Banks; a brother, Bob-
by Hart of Kent, Washington; a
sister, Mary Brist of Forest
Grove; four grandchildren,
nieces and nephews.

Obituary
NORMAN V. HAWTHORNE
Norman Vale Hawthorne,
81, Cornelius, died October 18,
2012.
Mr. Hawthorne was born
September 26, 1931, in Hau-
gen, Wisconsin, to Vale E. and
Mildred (Lewis) Hawthorne. He
was raised in Wisconsin and
graduated from Spooner High
School in 1993. He started
farming with his family and
moved to Portland in 1960,
where he worked at a gas sta-
tion.
In 1975, he married Char-
lotte “Diane” Boileau. They
made their home in Timber be-
fore moving to Cornelius in
1996. He worked for Cascade

Judith “Judy” Anne Mills, 70,
Forest Grove, died October 10,
2012. A service was held Octo-
ber 14 at Emanuel Lutheran
Church in Cornelius.
Mrs. Mills was born Febru-
ary 5, 1942, in Jay, Oklahoma,
Kalin Rose Morris

Grove.
She enjoyed four wheeling,
music, camping, and art. She
was a fan of the Ducks.
Survivors include her par-
ents; a sister, Kristen Lynn
Morris of Forest Grove; her
grandparents, Bob and Kathy

LORRAINE F. SHERMAN
KALIN ROSE MORRIS
Kalin Rose Morris, 20, For-
est Grove, died October 6,
2012, of injuries she received
in a motor vehicle accident. A
service was held October 20 in
the Forest Grove High School
auditorium.
Ms. Morris was born May 5,
1992, in Hillsboro, to Ronald S.
and Kenna L. (Jacobs) Morris.
She was raised in Banks, grad-
uating from Banks High School
in 2010. She was working as a
caregiver at The Grove Assist-
Lorraine Frances Sherman,
88, Hillsboro, died October 21,
2012. At her request, no servic-
es will be held.
Mrs. Sherman was born
September 4, 1924, in Min-
neapolis, Minnesota, to Floyd
W. and Katherine M. Burns.
In 1941, she married
Thomas E. Sherman. They
made their home in Northern
California. They later divorced.
She was a Licensed Vocational
Nurse. In 1972, she moved to
Vernonia and operated The
Coffee Break Café until she re-
tired.
She enjoyed cooking, nutri-
tional
research,
reading,
chocolate and listening to mu-
sic.
She was preceded in death
by her siblings.
Survivors include two sons,
Steven Sherman of Roseburg,
and Thomas Sherman of Ver-
nonia; two daughters, Roxana
Sherman-Heath, and Randal
Harvey, both of Vernonia; four
grandchildren, six great-grand-
children, one niece and two
nephews.
