Incumbents are only filers for the
Vernonia city council positions
No new names appeared on
the list of candidates on August
23, the deadline for filing nomi-
nation papers for positions on
the Vernonia city council.
Mayor Josette Mitchell filed
for reelection, as did Coun-
cilors Kim Tierney and Randy
Parrow.
The election will take place
on November 6, 2012.
Columbia County jobless rate up
a bit in July, but lower than 2011
Columbia County’s season-
ally adjusted unemployment
rate was 9.5 percent in July, up
slightly from the previous
month (9.2%), but lower than
the year before (10.3%). The
rate was higher than the
statewide rate (8.7%) and the
national rate (8.3%). Total em-
ployment fell by 29 to 22,510
and the number of unemployed
people rose by 197 to 2,486.
Total employment this July was
254 more than one year before
and there were 68 fewer peo-
ple unemployed this year.
For comparison, the Port-
land metro area’s seasonally
adjusted unemployment rate
was 8.1 percent in July, the
same as in June. The year-ago
rate was 9.2 percent.

pickup and made another set on the other side
of the road. This time we managed to call in a
buck deer, I told Jim that he was using the wrong
call. We made camp that night and slept out un-
der the stars on cots. The night sky is never a
disappointment.
Day two we moved to a different location and,
on our first setup, the Foxpro called in another
song dog, but this one hung up and Jim had to
resort to a hurried off-hand shot that did not con-
nect. That’s how coyotes become educated. The
weather was really hot and we hid under the
shade of a dense juniper tree for the rest of the
day. As darkness started to fall, we observed a
couple of buck deer and a herd of wild horses
come in to a water hole a few hundred yards
from camp.
Day three we were up bright and early, and
made our way down from camp into a broad
open draw. Of course we ran right into two ante-
lope bucks and then a herd of horses. We quiet-
ly set up where the junipers gave way to the
grassy draw below us. Once again the rabbit
screamed across the open expanse and once
again a coyote could not resist an easy meal.
This dog though came in barking the whole way.
The coyote seemed a little leery at times, but as
soon as the rabbit sounds started he would start
trotting up toward us. I had my cross-hairs on the
coyote when the report of Jim’s rifle sounded.
The coyote had eaten his last rabbit.
Day four found us in the same area, but we
struck out for a ridge that divided the draw where
we had shot the coyote the day before, from the
next draw over. The first set with Jim hand call-
ing, another mule deer showed up, this time it
was a Doe. I told Jim, that is still the wrong call!
Three sets later I was sitting in a little brushier
area and heard something right behind me.
Turning around, I found myself face to face with
a bobcat. I was hoping that the bobcat wasn’t
real hungry, as I went for my camera instead of
my rifle. After a couple of pictures, the bobcat
decided he wasn’t up to tackling that big leafy
bush with glasses, and slowly trotted up a trail in
the bushes. The bush was glad.
