2012 Vernonia Friendship Jamboree Page 3 Here are some of the events scheduled for your enjoyment Rendezvous Every year, the Nehalem River Rendezvous Black Powder Encampment in- cludes a large Trader’s Row, children’s games, shooting and throwing events that are fun for both participants and spectators. There will be archery, rifle, and pistol trail and novelty shoots. The an- nual rendezvous sponsored by the Vernonia Muzzleload- ers is held on Stoney Point Road, two miles north of Vernonia. The rendezvous is open to the public and events are scheduled from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on both Friday and Saturday, and from 9:00 a.m. to noon on Sunday. Admission is free. Take Hwy. 47 North from Vernon- ia, approximately 1-1/2 miles, turn left at Stoney Point Road and follow the signs to the parking area. Softball Tournament Competition in the annual Vernonia Jamboree invita- tional Softball Tournament will take place every day during Jamboree behind the old schools on Bridge St. The men’s teams will start playing Friday at 6:00 p.m., Saturday at 8:00 a.m. and Sunday at 8:00 a.m. The women’s teams will start play on both Saturday and Sunday at 9:00 a.m. Live Music & Beer Garden During Jamboree Music at the Shay Music at the Shay, at Shay Park, will feature mu- sic by Ryan Taylor, Mark Brown, The Just Reverie, The New Vintage Trio, Paul and Jesse, and Lowell Mitchell. The music will be on Saturday, August 4 start- ing at 1:00 p.m. All music is free. Car Show The Jamboree Cruisin’ has been cancelled for 2012, because of lack of space caused by the demo- lition of schools on Bridge St. Watch for the Cruisin’ to return in 2013. Food, food, food As always, there will be lots of food available. There will be vendors right off Bridge St. on Adams St. and then there are the Jam- boree staples: • The famous Lions Club barbecued beef sandwiches served on Bridge Street across from Shay Park from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. Fri- day and Saturday, and from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Sunday. • Pancake Feed at the Senior Center, 446 Bridge St., on Saturday and Sun- day, from 7:00 to 11:00 a.m., $8 for adults, $5 for children under 6. Horse Gaming Show Library Book Sale The Vernonia Ridge Rid- ers will hold a Playday, a horse gaming show and great family event, on Sun- day, August 5, with competi- tion starting at 9:30 a.m. in the Anderson Park Arena. Show events include Texas Barrel, Pole Bending, Flag Race, and Obstacle Course. Participants may compete in one of five age categories; nine years and under, 10-14 years, 15-20 years, 21-45 years, or 46 years and older. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m. Contestants must wear heeled shoes or boots and helmets are recom- mended. Stud horses will not be allowed to participate and no dogs are allowed in the arena. The Friends of the Ver- nonia Public Library will hold a two day book sale, at the Library on Weed Ave., on Friday, August 3, from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. and Saturday, August 4, from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. with the last hour being a $1.00 bag sale. The book selection will in- clude both used paperbacks and hard covers, all at below bargain prices. Kids’ Fishing Derby The Izaak Walton League Kids’ Fishing Derby has been cancelled for 2012, due to the weedy condition Logging Show Logging show competi- tors will be tested on their accuracy, speed, and agility in a variety of contests dur- ing the Jamboree Logging Show on Sunday, August 5, starting at noon in Hawkins Park. Most of the partici- pants are professional log- gers. Events include axe throw, 4-5 ci. and 5-6 ci. working saws, unlimited saws, women’s bucking, pole falling, steeple chase, pole walk and snip, and Welcome to Vernonia’s Friendship Jamboree & Logging Show Friday & Saturday Night Music by Third Member Downtown Vernonia Great Food Biker Friendly Open 11a.m. to 2:30 a.m. Friday & Saturday choker setting. The Vernonia show is one of only two Columbia Coun- ty logging competitions. There will be trophies at the conclusion of each event. Kids get to participate as well, in the kids’ choker set- ting event, and their own axe throw competition. Women may compete in Womens’ Bucking and/or the Women’s Hard Hat Toss, or in open events. After a hot competition, the participants cool off with the water events; pole walk, boom stick run and burling, on (and sometimes in) Rock Creek. The Logging Show is even older than Jamboree, having started three or four years before the first Jam- boree in1957. Registration will be from 10:00 to 11:30 a.m. Caulk boots are required; contest- ants operating power saws must also wear chaps.
