Between the Bookends
By Susan Cackler, Library Assistant
Banks Public Library
Our renovation has been
many months in the making,
but we are finally back to reg-
ular hours and we have a
beautiful, newly renovated li-
brary to share with our pa-
trons. We appreciate the pa-
tience everyone has shown as
we have dealt with changes in our plans due to delays
in product shipping. To celebrate the completion of the
renovation, we are having a grand re-opening on Sat-
urday, July 14, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Every-
one is invited to come see our new space.
The renovation has resulted in the addition of about
900 square feet to the library space. This new space
allows for our collection to be housed more comfort-
ably and also provides more space for patrons to sit
and read or use the Wi-Fi. Since the library has ab-
sorbed the former community room space, plans are
underway for a Phase 2 project which would construct
a new meeting space and allow for future growth of
the library. In the meantime, City Hall is available for
community meetings.
Coincidental to our renovation, we also have sever-
al other changes to our operations. The first of these
is that Banks Public Library has joined the rest of the
WCCLS libraries in using radio frequency tags to
check items in and out. This greatly streamlines circu-
lation for staff and also paves the way for our library to
have a self-check machine, which should happen lat-
er this summer. Currently, patrons pick up their holds
from the holds shelf and bring them to the front desk
to check out. In the future, patrons will either bring
them to the front desk or check them out themselves.
We also have a new phone system which will allow
for voicemail messages. Finally, the library will be able
to accept credit cards in the near future.
The City of Banks provided the funding for the ren-
ovation portion of this two-phase project. The second
phase, construction of new space to allow for future
growth of the library and to reinstate a community
room for public meeting use, will be financed through
various funding sources, including grants and dona-
tions. The Friends of the Library and a group of inter-
ested citizens have started the fundraising campaign.
The Library Expansion Team received fundraising
training through a grant from the Ford Family Founda-
tion.
The Summer Reading Program is in full swing. We
have had two events and will have three more on
Thursdays at 2:00 p.m. The next program will be July
12 when Angel Ocasio will entertain with physical
comedy, jokes, juggling, balancing and magic.
On July 19, Mad Science will present an interactive
science show. Yo-Yo University will demonstrate the
amazing possibilities of the yo-yo on July 26.
The last day to sign up for summer reading is July
16. August 1 is the first day to turn in completed read-
ing records and receive an award book. August 31 will
be the last day to do so.
Join us for craft night Wednesday, July 11, from
6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. in the library. This will be our
first time having craft night in the main part of the li-
brary so we will see how it works. Enjoy some lively
conversation while you work on your favorite craft.
Come and meet some new friends or visit with old
ones while using the library’s work space. You may
find knitters, scrapbookers, quilters and maybe even a
tatter or two. If you would like to be on an e-mail re-
minder list for craft night, call the library with your
name and e-mail.
Since Miss Cathy has retired, we won’t have any
Preschool Storytime until September.
On the Shelf:
The Wind Through the Keyhole by Stephen King. In
this novel, King returns to the territory of his Dark Tow-
er fantasy saga. He began this series in 1974 and
wrote the concluding three novels in 2003 and 2004.
Fan of the series will be thrilled to revisit the epic, but
this novel also stands on its own for all readers, an en-
chanting and haunting journey into a the world of
Roland Deschain.
Let’s Pretend This Never Happened (a Mostly True
Memoir) by Jenny Lawson. Lawson’s hilarious prose
has such energy that you may need to stop and catch
your breath while reading it. Lawson dares to say out
loud what most people only think and the result can be
hilarious. She manages to find the humor in both
anorexia and a seriously odd father. Over time, Law-
son’s long-suffering husband and sweet daughter help
her discover that the most terribly human moments –
the ones we want to pretend never happened – are
the very same moments that make us the people we
are today.
The Expats by Chris Pavone. Kate Moore is a work-
ing mother struggling to maintain her life and an un-
bearable secret. When her husband is offered a job in
Luxembourg, she jumps at the chance to leave behind
her double life and start anew. She enjoys being an
expat and doing the housewifely things she’s never
done before, but her husband is growing distant and
evasive. When another American couple arrives, Kate
becomes suspicious that they are not who they say
they are and she thinks her past is catching up with
her. As she starts to dig in to the mystery around her,
she unravels a mind-boggling long-play con that
threatens her family, her marriage, and her life.
