65th anniversary for Shafer and Fellas
65 years ago, on May 18,
1947, two couples shared a
wedding day. Sally Shafer mar-
ried Lloyd Fellas and Sally’s
brother, Levi “Mack” Shafer
married Lillian Benefiel. Sally’s
father had forbidden her to
marry before finishing high
school. On May 17, she gradu-
ated clearing the way for her
wedding the next day.
The wedding took place at
the home of Lillian’s parents,
Jack and Maud Benefiel, in
Banks. Elva Tolke made the
angel food wedding cake, and
some of the guests sat in one
of Jack Benefiel’s school buses
while they ate the cake.
Lloyd Fellas is a retired log-
ger and heavy equipment oper-
ator, and Sally Fellas is a re-
tired school bus driver and
cook. They had three children,
and now have grandchildren.
Mack Shafer is a retired
school bus contractor and driv-
er. Lillian Shafer is also a re-
tired school bus driver. They
have two children, both living in
Banks, plus grandchildren and
great-grandchildren.
Both couples still enjoy do-
ing things as couples, and all of
them enjoy going to Spirit
Mountain.
Now, almost 65 years later,
both couples still live in Banks,
and have traditionally gone out
together for anniversary din-
ners. This year is no exception,
except their families will join
them this time.
When asked what it’s like to
be married for so long, Lillian
Shafer said, “It’s pretty good,
there’s give and take. Some-
times you have to walk away,
don’t argue, and then come
back and try to settle things.”
She added, “It doesn’t seem
like 65 years.”
If you see any of the not-so-
newlyweds, be sure and wish
them a happy 65th anniversary.
