Vernonia council says, “No fee for school sewer/water hookups”
Mayor Josette Mitchell, and
Councilors Bruce McNair and
Donna Webb were enough to
make a quorum for the April 16
Vernonia City Council meeting.
Councilors Randy Parrow and
Kim Tierney had given notice of
their inability to be at this meet-
ing.
The council unanimously
approved a motion waiving the
water and sewer hookup fees
for the school district. These
fees had not been included in
discussions with the school dis-
trict before the project began
and it would require an engi-
neer to determine the correct
amount to charge.
City Administrator Bill Haack
received approval from council
to contract with Tetra Tech to
update the city’s Master Capital
Plan and assess the System
Development Charge (SDC)
fee schedule. Tetra Tech did
the original work on these in
1999 and it is recommended
that they be updated every 4-
10 years. Since it has been
longer than that, Haack esti-
mated that starting over with
another company could cost
$150,000, but having Tetra
Tech update these items is es-
timated at $10,000.
Council also authorized
Haack to request a six month
extension on a DEQ Clean Wa-
ter State Revolving Fund Appli-
cation. If it is not extended, the
application time frame will run
out before the city has received
final plans for the upgrades
they may need these additional
funds to complete.
Police Chief Michael Conner
presented a request from Bill
Sword to change part of the
one-way road around Ander-
son Park into a two-way street
from Jefferson Ave. to the
bridge over to the Sword place.
Conner suggested that this
would better facilitate Sword
being able to move big equip-
ment off and onto his property.
Council had no problem with
occasional use of that road for
heavy equipment (with appro-
priate flagging), but balked at a
change that would allow regu-
