GENEVIEVE M. FISHER
Robert O. Borders, 76, Bak-
er City, died April 3, 2012. A
memorial service was held
April 14 at the Elm Street Bap-
tist Church in Sweet Home.
Mr. Borders was born Au-
gust 20, 1935, in Lansing,
Kansas. He moved to Vanport
in 1942.
In 1953, he married Jean
Ann Anderegg. They made
their home in Vernonia, before
retiring to Richland in 1997,
then later to Baker City.
He worked in the timber in-
dustry in Springfield and Ver-
nonia, owned the Timbernook
restaurant in Vernonia for many
years, sold real estate and was
the owner/operator of R&J Log
Trucking.
He enjoyed the outdoors, in-
cluding hunting in Eastern Ore-
gon, trout fishing on the Snake
River, and salmon fishing on
the Oregon coast. He also
planted bountiful gardens
every year.
He was preceded in death
by his brother, Derald Borders.
Survivors include his wife;
three sons, Bob of Baker City,
Steve of Vernonia, and David
of Lebanon; five grandchildren
and eight great-grandchildren.

er, 81, recently of Forest
Grove, died April 10, 2012.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary
will be held at 10:30 a.m. be-
fore the funeral mass on Satur-
day, April 21, at 11:00 a.m. at
St. Mary’s Catholic Church, in
Vernonia, with Fr. Luan Tran
celebrant. Interment will follow
at Vernonia Memorial Ceme-
tery. Visitation hours will be
held on Thursday, April 19, and
Friday, April 20, from Noon to 7
p.m. at the Fuiten, Rose & Hoyt
Funeral Home in Forest Grove.
Mrs. Fisher was born Sep-
tember 11, 1930, in Hood Riv-
er, to Lee and Clara (Van-
Domelen) Schwab. She was
raised and educated in Vernon-
ia. In 1948, she married Tracy
Ellsworth Hanson. They made
their home in Vernonia. Mr.
Hanson died in 1969. In 1974,
she married Dale Eldred Fish-
er. They made their home in
Vernonia before moving to
Longview, Washington, in 1977.
In 1993, they moved back to
Vernonia, then to The Dalles in
2000, before returning to Ver-
nonia in 2004. In 2008, they
moved to Forest Grove. She
worked for Tektronix for 10
years before retiring in 1974.
She later worked as a waitress
at the Coffee Shop in Vernonia
and the Mid Valley Coffee Shop
in Longview.
She enjoyed sewing, crafts,
her dog, Holly, and her cats,
Sebastian and Callie.
She helped found Vernonia
Pride to “keep Vernonia beauti-
ful,” and helped with Jamboree
activities for many years. She
volunteered for the American
Cancer Society. In the 1970s,
she promoted Melodramas as
a fundraiser for the American
Cancer Society. After the 1996
flood, she helped provide sup-
plies to the community, and ran
the “Flood Duds” clothes clos-
et. While in Longview, she or-
ganized a neighborhood ga-
rage sale, as well as block
watches.
She was preceded in death
by a brother, Melvin Schwab.
Survivors include her hus-
band of Forest Grove; three
sons, Gary Lee Hanson of Sea-
side, Tracy Lawrence “Larry”
Hanson of Vernonia; and
Robert Elling “Rob” Hanson of
Beaverton; one daughter,
Christine Y. Hall of Forest
Grove;
three
step-sons,
Richard Fisher of Texas, Timo-
thy “Tim” Fisher of Bremerton,
Wash., and James “Jim” Fisher
of Seattle, Wash.; one step-
daughter, Margaret Field of
Seattle, Wash.; one brother,
Robert Schwab of McMinnville;
one sister, Lois Thienes of The
Dalles; eight grandchildren,
seven step-grandchildren, 10
great-grandchildren, 15 step-
great-grandchildren, two step-
great-great-grandchildren,
nieces and nephews.

Church or to the American

JAMES “JIM” DALE SMITH
James “Jim” Dale Smith, 73,
Buxton, died April 4, 2012. A
graveside service was held
April 11 at the Buxton Ceme-
tery.
Mr. Smith was born Novem-
ber 22,1938, in Lamar, Mis-
souri, to William A. and Martha
E. (Hartman) Smith. The family
moved around the states fol-
lowing crops before settling in
Oregon in the 1950s.
James Dale Smith
In 1959, he married Ellen
Smith. They made their home
in North Plains before the
1960s, when they moved to
Top Hill in Buxton. He was a
mechanic. He and his brother,
Richard, leased the Rocket
Station in Buxton. He also grew
strawberries.
He enjoyed being on a trac-
tor and working in the garden,
cooking, building and racing
cars, dancing and singing. His
favorite car was a 1949
Oldsmobile.
He was preceded in death
by four sisters, Georgia Owen-
by, Alice Schmidlin, Laurie
Connelly, and Rosie Rice.
Survivors include his wife;
three sons, Willie of Banks,
Roy of Buxton, and Leo of For-
est Grove; two daughters, Peg-
gy Estes, and Rita Smith, both
of Buxton; three siblings,
Richard Smith, Daisy Phelan,
and Deanie Watts; 14 grand-
children, and 14 great-grand-
children.
Remembrances are sug-
gested to his wife, Ellen Smith.

COZY MAE TATMAN
Cozy Mae Tatman, 86, For-
est Grove, died April 7, 2012. A
service was held April 12 at the
Vernonia Christian Church.
Mrs. Tatman was born De-
cember 31, 1925, in Temvick,
North Dakota, to Clyde and Lily
(Harshbarger) Little. The fami-
ly moved to the Denver, Col-
orado, area in 1939, where she
graduated from Wheatridge
High School in 1944.
In 1948, she married Willard
Calvin Tatman. They made
their home in Denver, then
moved to Arizona, then Califor-
nia. In 1955, they moved to
Parkdale, then to Portland in
1958. In 1979, they moved to
Forest Grove. She moved to
Vernonia in 1993, then re-
turned to Forest Grove in 2010.
She worked at Pendleton
Woolen Mills as a traffic clerk in
the shipping department for 26
years.
She enjoyed gardening,
cross stitching, watching old
musicals, crocheting. She was
a member of the Ladies Bible
Study Group and the Ladies
Study Group. She volunteered
at the grade school and at bible
school.
She was preceded in death
by her husband and a sister,
Mary Little Caldwell.

Survivors include two sons,
Clyde D. Tatman of Vernonia,
and James W. Tatman of Ft.
Collins, Col., one daughter,
Wyla Mikalow of Vernonia; one
brother, George Little of Den-
ver, Col.; and one sister, Jean
Porter of Denver, Col.; nine
grandchildren, seven great-
grandchildren, nieces and
nephews.

sociation, Oregon Chapter.
