Vernonia Community Reads starting now
The Vernonia Public Library
is pleased to announce the
books and activities that will be
included in the Vernonia Com-
munity Reads for 2012. Fund-
ed by a joint grant from the Co-
lumbia County Cultural Coali-
tion and The Friends of the Ver-
nonia Library, the ultimate goal
of the project is to create and
perpetuate an ongoing love of
books, the arts and the human-
ities.
Youngsters will be reading
and participating in an activity
related to Addie Boswell’s
book, The Rain Stomper. Ms
Boswell will be at the library
Tuesday, April 10, at 3:30 p.m.
to do an interactive reading,
talk about how the book was
made and lead a drawing activ-
ity on character development.
Young adults will be reading
The Hunger Games by Suz-
anne Collins. The activities re-
lating to this book are a joint
undertaking between Vernonia
High School and library staff,
and will include a food drive,
discussions and art projects.
Adults will be reading Craig
Lesley’s books – especially
The Sky Fisherman with Mr.
Lesley reading from and dis-
cussing his writing on Satur-
day, April 14, at 4:00 p.m. in the
library.
Several copies of each of
these titles are available in the
library. The public is encour-
aged to read the selected
books, take part in the associ-
ated activities and enjoy the art
work and projects displayed
during National Library Week –
April 8-14.
Vernonians awoke on March 1 to find that March had come in like a lion.
Tai Chi class registrations are now being taken
Simple Tai Chi classes are
forming now. The classes will
be 1-1/4 hour for eight weeks.
The cost will be $60 plus $20
for the book. The class will be
taught by Steve Marsh. Days
and times to be determined,
based on interest. The class
will be held at the Banks Per-
forming Arts building.

Vernonia Lake stocked this week
The Oregon Department of
Fish & Wildlife (ODFW) will
stock Vernonia Lake with 3,500
trout sometime this week and
will stock another 4,000 next
week. Additional trout are
scheduled to be stocked in
April.
Mission Conference starts March 23

Bible Church. And, Bob’s inspi-
rational message at the Satur-
day very popular and delicious
Men’s Breakfast, at 8:00 a.m.,
will be better than any airline
food for nourishment and “lift”.
Robin Rempel, recently re-
turned from Uganda, Africa, will
share alongside Katherine
Rodgers at the Saturday, 12
noon, luscious Ladies Lun-
cheon, known for its beautiful,
bountiful tables of tasty treats.
Ladies, do come relax and re-
fresh with terrific tastes and
talks.
Saturday at 7:00 p.m. spot-
lights Robin again with mes-
sages of other African adven-
tures. All three speakers will
share on Sunday at 10 a.m.,
with a question and answer
time for curious minds needing
to know. At 11 a.m., Bob will
speak with depth and detail
during Worship Service. The
12:30 p.m. Potluck Lunch of
culinary creations will close the
Conference.
Everyone is invited to all free
events and reservations are
helpful for meals, so contact

Senior Center News
Two stalwarts of the Golden Oldies made their last appearance
today; Duke Gortler and Ellie Thompson are retiring from this en-
semble of senior citizen musicians. After many years of entertain-
ing at our center, they certainly deserve a huge expression of
thanks from all of us.
It’s almost time for the wearin’ of the green! Yes, St. Patrick’s
Day is March 17, and diners at the Vernonia Senior Center will en-
joy the traditional hearty meal of corned beef and cabbage on
Wednesday, March 14 at noon. Join in the fun — everyone is Irish
at this time of year.
It seems too soon, but Daylight Savings Time starts Sunday,
March 11! Remember to set your clock ahead by one hour before
you go to bed Saturday night.
It’s time to renew your membership in the Vernonia Senior
Center. If you are 50 or older and live in the Vernonia area, come
check us out. The center has many activities and services, and all
for a membership fee of just $15.00 per year. To find out how the
center operates, why not attend this Friday’s board of directors
meeting at 10 a.m. Your questions and suggestions are welcome.
Don’t forget to take advantage of the center’s thrift shop, open
Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. Great bar-
gains are available at all times, and during the first week of every
month, everything in the store is half price. If the cost of a Prom
dress is a concern, come in and take a look at formal gowns. Re-
member, a little skill with a sewing machine or needle and thread
can transform an ordinary garment into the latest fashion!
You don’t have to be a member to enjoy companionship and
good food at the center. Lunch is served Monday through Friday
at noon, with a $4.00 donation suggested for those 60 and older,
and $5.00 for those under 60. If you prefer lunch to go, call ahead
and place your order. Meals to go are $5.00.
Breakfast is available every Friday at the Senior Center, from
7:30 to 9:00 a.m., at $3.50 per person regardless of age. Maple
bars made fresh daily are $1.00 each. If you want maple bars for
a gathering of any kind, call 503-429-3912 a day or two ahead
and place your order.
Foot Care is scheduled on the second and fourth Fridays of
each month, at $15 per person. Call Marilyn Albro, R.N., for an
appointment, at 503-429-0406.

Alumni game
The Vernonia Alumni Bas-
ketball game is this Saturday,
March 10, starting at 6:00 p.m.
in the Vernonia High School
gymnasium. There will also be
a raffle, concessions, and
baked goods for sale.
Admission is $5 for adults,
$4 for sixth grade through high
school, and $3 for kindergarten
through fifth grade. The game
is sponsored by the OSEA
Classified Employees of the
Vernonia School District.

Their will be a Book Sale at
the Vernonia Library on Satur-
day, March 17, from 10:00 a.m.
to 5:00 p.m. This is a fundrais-
er for the Friends of the Library.
