Recognizing that the need
for donations is greater than
ever at local food banks across
the nation, Curves International
kicked off the 2012 Curves
Food Drive on March 1 with a
challenge to all Curves Clubs
to meet or exceed last year’s
donations. Each club, including
Curves of Banks, is asking its
members to donate bags of
non-perishable food or cash
throughout the month of March
to support their local communi-
ty food bank. In addition,
Curves of Banks will waive the
joining fee for new members
who bring in a bag of non-per-
ishable food or donate $30 to
their local food bank from
March 12 to 25.
For more information about
Curves of Banks, located at
672 South Main Street, and the
2012 Curves Food Drive, con-
tact a Curves of Banks staff
member at 503-324-9262 or

Mayor Kinsky proclaims March as
Earthquake Awareness Month
Banks Mayor John Kinski, at
the February 14 city council
meeting, proclaimed March
2012 as Earthquake and
Tsunami Awareness Month, but
the need to be aware of Ore-
gon’s vulnerability to earth-
quakes goes far beyond any
political boundaries.
Oregon suffered consider-
able damage from a moderate
earthquake in 1993 and a
tsunami in 1964. Scientific evi-
dence indicates that the State
of Oregon is at risk for much
larger and more damaging
earthquakes and tsunamis.
A major earthquake associ-
ated with the Cascadia Sub-
duction Zone would generate
strong ground shaking and a
destructive tsunami, similar to
the event that occurred off the
coast of Japan in 2011, when
the tsunami crossed the Pacific
Ocean, causing damage on the
coast of Oregon and California.
The most recent event of this
type in Oregon occurred on
January 26, 1700.
Oregon enacted laws in
1995 and 2011 requiring
schools, state and local agen-
cies, and large private employ-
ers to instruct and drill students
and employees on emergency
procedures such as those re-
lated to earthquakes and
tsunamis. Oregon Military De-
partment office of Emergency
Management will be highlight-
ing these preparedness and
mitigation procedures, and pro-
vide increased earthquake and
tsunami information to Oregon
residents and visitors in March.
