Hyde gets award at 47J board meeting
The Oregon Small School
Association (OSSA) was on
hand at the Vernonia School
District Board of Directors
meeting, November 17, to
present district employee Dana
Hyde with a Salute to Success
award for her involvement in
school-to-work and school-to-
college programs in Vernonia.
“I’m humbled and I appreci-
ate the nomination from the
bottom of my heart,” said Hyde.
School board member Greg
Kintz nominated Hyde for the
award.
Later in the meeting, Kintz
was unanimously chosen to
continue in his position on the
Oregon School Board Associa-
tion as a director.
John Donovan, from the
Metropolitan Group, talked to
the board about the ongoing
new school fundraising efforts,
including the fact that the dis-
trict has known since the start
that there would be a gap be-
tween the timing of construc-
tion and the fundraising, when
the district would need to ob-
tain loans or some other fund-
ing mechanism to pay for con-
struction before the final
fundraising money would be re-
ceived. The district is currently
looking for ways to handle this.
In other business, the board,
• approved a list of items
that will be declared as surplus,
after the teaching staff decides
whether they can use any of
the items.
The next board meeting will
be December 8, starting at 6:00
p.m., at the district office.

Chalk Talk
Chalk Talk is a column of information
about Vernonia schools. This column
was provided by Superintendent Dr.
Ken Cox.
Two Washington Grade School milestones occurred this past
week. The Christmas Program returned and the first two pieces
of the masonry that is to be preserved were removed.
I was pleased to be in attendance at the WGS music program
last Thursday. It was neat to see all the students dressed up for the
holidays and singing together. They did a great job! I could also tell
that there were a lot of proud parents and older siblings in the au-
dience as well. Our thanks to not only Mr. Izzett, but also the class-
room teachers and parents who help the students learn the songs.
I would also like to acknowledge Mark Brown, who has stepped up
as our Maintenance Coordinator, for all the background work that
he and the custodians did to make this a success.
The other event that I would share came about as the result of
needing more information at the new school. The progress there
has been impressive, with the west classroom already having
some sheetrock in place. However, before they can complete the
library they need information about the banks of molded panels
from the front of Washington Grade School. One of these banks
of panels will be placed on the wall above the library checkout
desk in the new school. In order to determine what kind of sup-
port they would need, we had to remove a sample so we could
determine how heavy they were. Chris Stahl, site foreman for
P&C Construction at the new schools, and a helper, are seen
here taking the first piece down. This piece weighed only about
50 pounds, but the larger piece was estimated at nearly 300
pounds. The pieces will be cleaned and stored until they are able
to be installed in the new building.
We are planning on removing more of these historical artifacts
from WGS during Christmas break. We will also be using a num-
ber of different elements from WGS, both at the new school and
to form an informational kiosk or monument that will be located
near the current WGS site in the New Spencer Park. The final de-
sign for the park was shared at a Town Hall meeting yesterday af-
ter much input from both students and the community at large.
