Page 12 The INDEPENDENT, November 2, 2011 Between the Bookends By Susan Cackler, Library Assistant Banks Public Library Renovation plans are heat- ing up. Construction at the Banks Public Library will follow work being done at the Public Works Building, and while an exact date has not been set, work will definitely occur this winter. In preparation for the work, the library will not be tak- ing donations of books after November 15 until the work has been completed. Also, the community room will not be available for rental after the month of November. With the change of seasons comes the possibility of worsening weather conditions. If roads are snowy or icy, call the library at 503 324-1382 to make sure that we have been able to open. Also, if you are un- able to come to the library to return items because of weather conditions, give us a call and we will renew them for you. The Friends of the Banks Public Library are having another book fair at the Tanasbourne Barnes and No- ble, just in time for Christmas shopping. All day Friday and Saturday, November 18 and 19, a portion of the proceeds will be donated to the library when patrons present a certificate at check out or mention the li- brary. On the Shelf: Snuff by Terry Pratchett. If you are a long-time Pratchett fan, you probably already know this book is out. If you are not a long-time Pratchett fan, you prob- ably should be reading some of the 30- plus Discworld novels. In Snuff, the character focus is on Sam Vimes, commander of the Night Watch and one of Pratchett’s longest running protagonists. Vimes finally takes a va- cation, going to the countryside with his family, but a policeman on holiday always finds a crime. Soon Vimes is investigating smuggling, piracy and murder. Out of his element and without his customary support, his policing instincts lead him to smuggling, river pira- cy, murder, and even some crimes against goblins that aren’t against the law—yet. Still, Vimes ensures that justice is done. Snuff is basically a sequel to Thud, but most Discworld novels can be enjoyed without regard to what order they were written in. Pratchett combines humor, clever storylines and a little satire to deliver books that entertain and provoke a few thoughts. Beauty and the Werewolf by Mercedes Lackey. Lackey is working on a series called a Tale of the Five Hundred Kingdoms. Each novel in this series func- tions independently of the others and each takes on a different fairy tale. In this novel, the story of the Beau- ty and the Beast mixes with Little Red Ridinghood and results in a story about a young woman trying to avoid the pitfalls attendant to being an eldest daughter. Bel- la sets off in a red cloak to visit Granny and is attacked by a wolf, who is actually a cursed nobleman. Bella is torn between her family and this strange man who makes her laugh. With the work of a beauty and a wiz- ard, plus some godmotherly help, they may be able to break the werewolf spell and find a happy ending. The Bite Before Christmas by Lynsay Sands and Jeaniene Frost. If you’re not tired of vampires yet, here’s a holiday book with a vampire twist. Sands writes “the Gift,” the story of a vampire who finds her soulmate when she is snowed in over Christmas with an older mortal man. Frost writes “Home for the Holi- Please see page 14 Banks Public Library: 111 Market Street.
