The INDEPENDENT, November 2, 2011 Child safety seat event in St. Helens Columbia County Safe Kids will hold a child safety seat check-up event on Thursday, November 10, from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the St. Helens Fire Station, 105 S. 12th Street. The clinic is free. The clinic pro- vides an opportunity to have a child safety seat checked by a certified technician, who can correct misuse, help with instal- lation and teach you how to correctly install the seat. Tech- nicians can also check for seat recalls. There is no cost to have a technician check your child safety seats. Please plan to spend 30-60 minutes at the event. Through a grant funded by ACTS Oregon, Columbia County Safe Kids can provide low-cost child safety seats to families in need. Families who receive Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF) should contact their worker about payment for a seat. For more information about the clinic or the Columbia County child safety seat pro- gram, please contact Natalie at 503-410-3169. This column was provided by Superintendent Dr. Ken Cox. I have a couple of pieces of information I would like to share with you. The first is that we need some volunteers to assist stu- dents crossing Bridge Street in the morning. While most drivers do stop at the crosswalks when someone is waiting to cross, some do not. I have heard about this from one of our board mem- bers and we actually received a complaint about this last month. To address the issue we are looking for some adult volunteers who could help monitor the crosswalks from about 7:30 a.m. un- til the crossing guards get there at 7:50 each school day morn- ing. If you are out and about at that time in the morning, going for a walk or want to start a habit of being up and ready for the day, please consider helping us out and spending a few minutes pro- tecting our children. If you are interested please contact Wash- ington Grade School Principal Aaron Miller or the district office at 503-429-5891. The other piece of information that I would like to share with you is that as a District we are NOT going to be asking for anoth- er general obligation bond that would mean more taxes for our patrons. It came to my attention recently that this rumor is out there and I want you to know that the school board has indicated that this will not be an option as we continue to finalize the fund- ing for our new schools. In order to keep you up to date, I will be sharing more on the current status of our new school funding in my next article. Please come and talk to me if you have questions or concerns about our schools. Finally, I hope everyone had an enjoyable Halloween. I know I will, once I get all the forks and toilet paper off my front lawn! Mariolino’s ESE H T K C HEC CIALS ! Phone 503-397-4353 Open Mon - Fri 1 pm to 5 pm & Saturday, 11 am to 5 pm Hi! My name is Ruxspin and I need a home. I was rescued from a bad place. But that’s in the past and I don’t let it keep me from being friendly. I am a curious and affectionate girl who loves attention. Did I also mention I’m playful and purr- fectly happy to entertain myself if you are busy or at work. I like other well-behaved cats but would also be happy as a single cat. I would be happy just to have a loving home. Would you please be my family, take me home and love me?
