Obituary
SCOTT MICHAEL BASKA
Scott Michael Baska, 35, Ver-
nonia, died September 20, 2011.
A celebration of life service was
held September 24 at Vernonia
Community Church with Pastor
John J. Cahill, of the Pioneer
Baptist Fellowship, officiating.
Interment followed at Vernonia
Memorial Cemetery.
Mr. Baska was born Novem-
ber 21, 1975, in Forest Grove, to
Gene Grant and Teresa Darlene
(Heath) Baska. He was raised in
Vernonia, graduating from Ver-
nonia High School in 1994. He
was a brickmason and worked
for J & S Masonry in Portland.
He enjoyed golf and was a
huge fan and supporter of the
University of Oregon Ducks as
well as the Miami Dolphins.
He was preceded in death by
a brother, Robert Grant “Robbie”
Baska.
Survivors include his four chil-
dren Kayla Gilman of Hillsboro,
Alexis Baska, Hannah Baska
and Myla Baska, all of Vernonia;
his parents of Vernonia, two
brothers, Greg of Camas, Wash-
ington, and Kelly of Vernonia;
nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles,
and cousins.
Remembrances are suggest-
ed to the Scott Michael Baska
Trust Fund, for his children, at
the Vernonia branch of Wauna
Federal Credit Union.
NORMAN RODNEY BOND
Norman Rodney Bond, 61,
Scappoose, died September 23,
2011. A memorial service will be
held Saturday, October 22, at
1:00 p.m., at Calvary Lutheran
Church, 937 NE Jackson School
Rd., Hillsboro. A potluck recep-
tion will follow.
Mr. Bond was born August
19, 1950, in Salem, to Glen R.
and Grace E. (Harden) Bond.
The family moved to Nampa,
Idaho. When he was three, the
family moved to Timber before
moving to Banks in 1961. He
graduated from Banks High
School in 1969. He was a heavy
equipment operator, as he had
always wanted to be. He worked
for his father for Empire Light
Rock, and later worked 34 years
with John L. Jersey and Son.
In 1970, he married Joyce
Eckhardt. They made their home
in Banks. In 1989, he married
Bobbi J. Williams. They made
their home in Banks, before
moving, in 1992, first to Beaver-
ton, then settling in Scappoose.
He enjoyed watching Yankee
and Ducks games with his fami-
ly, golfing, playing cards, listen-
ing to all types of music, and
teasing people and knowing it
would be reciprocated.
He was preceded in death by
his parents; and three siblings,
Dorothy French, Clifford, and
Glen.
Survivors include his wife;
three sons, Jason, Justin, and
Jeff, all of Scappoose; one
brother, Rodger of Banks; eight
grandchildren,
nieces
and
nephews.

Survivors include three chil-
dren, Marty Berge and Trygve
Berge, Fawn Cecil and Shantrell
Cecil; his siblings, Janice Rauer,
Daniel, and Cathy Cecil; 10
grandchildren, five great-grand-
children, nieces, nephews and
his dear friend, Peggy Cone.

FRANK D. CECIL
Frank D. Cecil, 58, Vernonia,
died September 27, 2011. A cel-
ebration of life will be held on
October 8, at 2:00 p.m., at Lee’s
U-Catch. This will be a potluck
and please bring your own bev-
erage.
Mr. Cecil was born June 28,
1953, to Allen Josephus and Lo-
wise Irene Cecil. He was raised
in Banks. He served in the U.S.
Army before returning to Banks
where he worked as a logger. He
moved to Vernonia in the 1980s
and owned and operated Cecil
Logging for a time.
He was preceded in death by
his parents and his stepmother,
four great-grandchildren, nieces,
nephews, a large extended fam-
ily, and many friends.
Remembrances are suggest-
ed to Vernonia Cares Food Bank
or a charity of choice.
Gordon Lee Cline, 84, Forest
Grove, died September 29,
2011. A celebration of life service
was held October 4 at Forest
Grove Elks Lodge B.P.O.E.
2440.
Mr. Cline was born August 14,
1927, in Vernonia, to Merle and
Ella (Burnham) Cline. He was
raised in Vernonia and was a
member of the 1945 and the
1947 Vernonia High School
classes. He served in the U.S.
Navy before returning to com-
plete high school in 1947.
In 1948, he married Mary
Ann. They made their home in
Vernonia, Portland, Port Orford,
Washington, Vancouver, Wash.,
Seaside and Beaverton before
moving to Forest Grove in 1991.
He worked in the timber industry,
retiring from Crown Zellerbach in
1986.
He was an expert wood-work-
er who enjoyed working with
stained glass, and growing and
sharing tomatoes.
He was preceded in death by
a brother, Donald Cline.
Survivors include his wife;
two daughters, Carol Davis of
Vernonia, and Susan Lorentzen
of Cornelius; four grandchildren,
Phyllis “Fyrne” Taylor, 97,
Forest Grove, died September
20, 2011. Private burial rites
were held at Mist Cemetery. At
her request, there will be no
services.
Mrs. Taylor was born Febru-
ary 20, 1914, in McCool Junc-
tion, Nebraska, to William and
Rebecca (Bailey) Grover. She
was raised and educated in Neb.
In 1950, she married Ray
Monroe Taylor. They made their
home in Natal before moving to
Vernonia in 1933. In 2001, she
moved to Hillsboro, then to For-
est Grove in 2006.
She enjoyed sewing, quilting,
gardening, and was an avid
rockhound. She had been a
member of the Mist Helping Cir-
cle and the Vernonia Senior
Center.
She was preceded in death
by two brothers, Ronald “Bud”
Grover and Ross Grover; and
her sister, Evelyn West.
Survivors include her two
daughters, Doris Buchholz, and
Dayle Cox, both of Vernonia;
four grandchildren, four great-
grandchildren,
nieces
and
nephews.
RITA M. VANDERZANDEN
Rita Marie Vanderzanden, 92,
Forest Grove, died September
15, 2011. A funeral mass was
held, September 20, at St. An-
thony Catholic Church in Forest
Grove. Burial was at Mountain
View Memorial Gardens in For-
est Grove.
Mrs. Vanderzanden was born
August 7, 1919, in Greensville,
to William and Cristine Vande-
hey Cop. She attended school in
Banks, graduating from Banks
High School in 1938.
In 1939, she married Paul
Vanderzanden. They farmed un-
til Paul was stricken with polio in
1950. She was then a caregiver
at home until 1986.
She was a great seamstress
and enjoyed baking, with cook-
ies being her favorite. She also
enjoyed quilting, crocheting, and
reading.
She was preceded in death
by her husband.
Survivors include two daugh-
ters, Ardith Claeys of Portland,
and Aleen Andrews of Odessa,
Florida; four grandchildren, six
great-grandchildren, nieces and
nephews.
