Senior Center News
One of the most popular services at the Ver-
nonia Senior Center is the full meal served Mon-
day through Friday at noon. A $4.00 donation is
suggested for those 60 and older, and $5.00 for
those under 60. Lunch to go is $5.00, just call
ahead and place your order.
The 5 Area Lunch is on the last Monday of
each month. This month, the Clatskanie Senior
Center will host visitors from the other senior
centers in Columbia County, on September 26th.
On the last Wednesday of each month, Wau-
na Federal Credit Union makes a good lunch
even better by providing diners with free ice
cream.
Members’ birthdays are celebrated at lunch
on the last Friday of each month.
Don’t forget to get a free blood pressure
check on the 4th Wednesday of each month
from 11 a.m. to noon. This is an easy, but very
important health check — and free is a very
good price!
Your feet are important, too, and foot care is
scheduled on the second and fourth Fridays of
each month, at $15 per person. For an appoint-
ment, call Marilyn Albro, R.N., at 503-429-0406.
Do you need Halloween costumes or decora-
tions? Well, you can get them right here at the
senior center Thrift Shop, and at great prices. If
you’re planning a Halloween party, now is the
time to start making preparations. The Thrift
Shop is open Monday through Friday from 8:00
a.m. to 3:00 p.m.
It’s time to start thinking about a hot break-
fast, but if you sometimes find you don’t have
time to cook in the morning, give yourself a
break. You can sit down to a hot breakfast every
Friday at the center from 7:30 to 9:00 a.m., at
just $3.50 per person. If a full breakfast doesn’t
appeal to you, there are also freshly baked
maple bars for $1.00 each.
Other center activities include Bingo with
lunch on Mondays starting at 11:45 a.m., quilting
and other kinds of needle work on Tuesdays
from 10:30 to closing, several hours of entertain-
ment by The Golden Oldies on Wednesdays,
and games on Fridays from 1:00 ‘til ??.
Breads and pastries of many kinds are avail-
able daily at no charge, though donations are
accepted.
Come on in and check us out!

City of Vernonia fixes sewer leak
Staff from the City of Ver-
nonia Public Works crew re-
sponded to a sewer leak Sun-
day, September 11, on River-
side Avenue. The cause of the
leak was not immediately
known. On Monday, city staff
notified residents in the affect-
ed area and asked them to
avoid contact with river water.
The sewer line in that area is
30-45 feet underground on the
bank of the Nehalem River.
The city arranged tanker truck
hauling of the sewage until the
repairs could be completed.
The cause of the leak was
found to be a manhole column
that had settled and fractured
the 6” sewer line, which is en-
cased in concrete. The line was
repaired on the afternoon of
Thursday, September 15. Final
repairs of damage caused by
the leak will be completed in
the next couple of weeks.
