Last First Friday of 2011 date set
The final First Friday of 2011
will be held September 30 at
the Scout Cabin in Hawkins
Park from 5-8:00 p.m.
The last First Friday of the
season will be the last Friday of
September in order to coordi-
nate with Vernonia’s Salmon
Festival. Celebrate a great
summer with neighbors and
friends by enjoying arts, enter-
tainment and culture in our
community. Visit with local
artists and crafters, and enter
your name in a number of ex-
citing raffles, including paint-
ings of historic Vernonia as in-

Eye, a quilt donated by the Se-
nior Center, a Dave Anderson
collage, a Nintendo Game
Cube, and a Pampered Chef
turkey roasting pan. Children
can fish for Salmon (treats) in a
fishing game and decorate
cookies.
First Friday and Vernonia
Hands-on Art are dedicated to
celebrating the arts and build-
ing community. Stop by to kick
off the Salmon Festival week-
end and close the season with
an evening out with family,
friends and neighbors.

Wyatt Morgan Quaring
Wyatt Morgan Quaring was
born July 14, 2011, to Amy and
Andrew “Fro” Quaring of St.
Helens. He weighed 7-1/2
pounds and was 20 inches
long.
Grandparents are Mike and
Linda Spry, and Doug and Kim
Leach, all of Vernonia, and
Laurie Raaines of Hillsboro.
OSP seeks information on illegal
elk kills off Hwy. 26 in late August
Oregon State Police (OSP)
Fish & Wildlife Division troop-
ers are asking for the public’s
help to identify the suspect(s)
responsible for the illegal killing
of four elk found in late August
near Wolf Creek Road off High-
way 26 in Clatsop County. A re-
ward of up to $250 is offered by
the Oregon Hunters Associa-
tion Turn-in-Poacher (T.I.P.) re-
ward program for information
leading to an arrest in this
case.

four illegally killed elk, 3 cow
elk and one bull elk, were

wide garage sale day Septem-
ber 17.

two of the elk and the remains
of all four poached elk were left
to waste. Preliminary investiga-
tion indicates the elk were
killed within a couple weeks of
being found.

Is it time to have your hearing checked? Co-
lumbia Hearing Aids offers that service at the
Vernonia Senior Center on the third Monday of
each month from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m. The hearing
check is free, but an appointment is needed. Call
the center for an appointment.
If this hot weather has you wondering how to
enjoy a full meal without cooking, the solution
can be found right here. A complete, delicious
meal is served at the center Monday though Fri-
day at noon. A $4.00 donation is suggested for
those 60 and older, and $5.00 for those under
60. If you prefer lunch to go, for only $5.00 you
can call ahead and place your order.
In addition to good food, the Golden Oldies
entertain on Wednesdays, and diners have fun
with free Bingo on Mondays.
Those who are home-bound should check out
Meals on Wheels. Call Rosie McCoy to find out
how to put this great service to work.
Breakfast for all ages is served Fridays from
7:30 to 9:00 a.m. at just $3.50 per person. Maple
bars are made fresh daily for $1.00 each, and
you can order larger quantities for a gathering of
any kind by calling 503-429-3912 a day or two
ahead and placing your order.
A variety of packaged breads, rolls and pas-
tries is available daily at the Vernonia Senior
Center. These baked goods are free, but if you
choose to make a donation, it will help defray the
cost of pick up and delivery.
Foot Care is scheduled on the second and
fourth Fridays of each month, at $15 per person.

Calling needleworkers of all kinds – quilters,
knitters, crocheters, etc.– come on in and join
the Tuesday gatherings of needle-workers, any
time from 10:30 a.m. to closing.
Join the fun on Friday afternoons, with
games, especially pinochle. It’s a great way to
occupy your time from 1:00 p.m. ‘til…the game
is finished!
The center’s board of directors’ meeting is
held on the second Friday of each month at 10
a.m. If you have ideas or suggestions, it’s a
great time to bring them to the board’s attention.

SOLV beach cleanup date set
Volunteers in Oregon and
over 100 countries worldwide
will work toward trash free seas
for the SOLV Beach & River-
side Cleanup on September
17. At nearly 125 sites across
Oregon, thousands of volun-
teers will work to clean up trash
and enhance watershed health
before the fall rains wash litter
downhill into storm drains, wa-
terways and out to sea.
