Rep. Stephen F. Lynch (D-Mass.) and Sen.
Thomas R. Carper (D-Del.) have proposed bills
that would give the agency more freedom to
close post offices and allow it to make the $5.5
billion payments from a separate pension sur-
plus. These bills have drawn some Republican
support.
When a Congressman (or a constituent) ob-
jects to closing Post Offices in rural communi-
ties, they are often met with condescending re-
marks about “nostalgia”. Too many people in
D.C., and too many in control of big city newspa-
pers have never even visited our rural communi-
ties, much less lived in them.
There is a Constitutional requirement for Con-
gress to maintain a Postal Service (Benjamin
Franklin was our first Postmaster General).
What the new, improved Post Office will be is
anybody’s guess.

grandchildren; 16 great-grand-
children and one nephew.

homemaker.
She enjoyed sewing, hand-
work, quilting, and gardening.
She was preceded in death
by five brothers, and five sis-
ters.
Survivors include two sons,
Larry Hickman of Yamhill, and
Curtis Hickman of The Dalles;
two daughters, Patricia Spohn
of Cool, California, and Priscilla
Grice of Portland; nine grand-
children; nine great-grandchil-
dren; nieces and nephews.

GLENNDELL R. BOND JR.
Glenndell “Glen” Royal
Bond, Jr., 64, Hillsboro, died
August 6, 2011. A gathering of
family and friends will take
place Saturday, August 20,
from 11:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., at
the Verboort Gun Club.
Mr. Bond was born July 22,
1947, in Lebanon, to Glen and
Grace (Hardin) Bond. When he
was a young child, the family
moved to Timber, then to
Banks when he was a teenag-
er. He graduated from Banks
High School in 1965. He
served in the U.S. Navy during
the Vietnam war.
In 1971, he married Susie
Hartwick. They made their
home in Vancouver, Washing-
ton, before divorcing in 1985. In
1986, he married Julia “Judy”
Hamlin. They made their home
in Forest Grove until moving to
Hillsboro in 2010. He was a
welder with Columbia Indus-
tries in Hillsboro, for most of his
working life, before retiring in
2010.
He enjoyed golfing, high
school wrestling, reading, gar-
dening and visiting with friends.
He was preceded in death
by his parents and two siblings,
Dorothy French and Clifford
Bond.
Survivors include his wife;
two sons, John Chaney of Port-
land, and Bob Chaney of
Madras; three daughters,
Bethany Schaffner of North
Plains, Janelle Schaffner of
Beaverton, and Crystal Bond of
Aloha; two brothers, Rodger
Bond of Banks and Norman
Bond of Scappoose; three
grandchildren; nieces and
nephews.

sen, 90, Vernonia, died August
2, 2011. A celebration of life

Home in Vernonia, with Pastor
John Cahill officiating.
Mr. Christensen was born
April 22, 1921, in Vernonia, to
Vester and Helen (Anderson)
Christensen. He grew up on
the family farm near Vernonia,
and attended Lincoln and
Pleasant
Hill
Elementary
schools. He graduated from
Vernonia High School in 1939.
He served in the U.S. Army
during World War II.
In 1949, he married Velva
Ramsey. They later divorced.
He married Irene Bergerson in
1985. They made their home
on the Christensen homestead
in Vernonia. He worked as a
faller and later as a supervisor
for Holce Logging for 17 years,
retiring in 1986.
He enjoyed the outdoors,
fishing, hunting, hiking, camp-
ing, traveling and working on
his tree farm.
He was preceded in death
by his three sisters, Arvela
Robertson, Vesta King and
Lesta Peppard.
Survivors include his wife;
four stepsons, Phillip D. “Phil”
Meyer of Aloha, Stanley B.
“Stan” Meyer and Gary B.
Meyer, both of Vernonia, and
Ronald D. “Ron” Meyer of
Beaverton; three grandchil-
dren; nieces and nephews.

Loren Ellis, Jr., 84, Scap-
poose, died July 5, 2011. A cele-
bration of life will be held August
28.
Mr. Ellis was born October 26,
1926, in Portland, to Loren, Sr.
and Iva (Uttenberg) Ellis. He
graduated from Benson High
School. He was a Merchant Ma-
rine during World War II.
In 1948, he married Gloria
Faye Erickson. Shortly after the
marriage, they purchased the
Vernonia Farm with his parents.
In 1963, they bought out his par-
ents. They started a dairy with 13
cows and went into partnership
with their four sons. In 1980, they
moved the herd, now with 360
head, to Scappoose. He was a
supervisor at ESI in Portland for
10 years and served on the Ver-
nonia School Board for 10 years.
He enjoyed trips to be beach,
maintaining and managing his
rental properties in Vernonia and
Scappoose.
Lucille Eva Hickman, 94,
Hillsboro, died August 9, 2011.
Graveside services were held
August 12 at Vernonia Memori-
al Cemetery with Pastor Sam
Hough officiating.
Mrs. Hickman was born De-
cember 7, 1916, in Custer
County, Nebraska, to Fred Cur-
tis and Amy Mehetibel (Burnett)
Hickman. She was raised on
the family farm and educated in
Broken Bow, Neb.
In 1935, she married
Charley Lawrence Hickman.
They made their home in Ne-
braska before moving to Cor-
vallis in 1938. They moved to
Vernonia in 1947. In 1990, she
moved to McMinnville, then to
Forest Grove in 1999. In 2008,
JAMES “SLO JIM” HOLM
James “Slo Jim” Holm, 65,
Vernonia, died July 20, 2011.
Mr. Holm was born Septem-
ber 30, 1945, in Stockton, Cali-
fornia, to Carl and Marcella
Holm. He served in the U.S.
Army during the Vietnam war.
He was living in Manning with
Sue and a daughter, Amber, until
he moved to Vernonia around
1990.
He enjoyed motorcycles, the
outdoors, and “critters”. He re-
spected family and honesty most
of all. He was known for his hon-
esty and loyalty and friends knew
him as a gentleman to the end.
He is survived by children, a
sister and grandchildren. His
friends are trying to locate his
relatives.
