Sheriff’s Report
of Fiscal Year 2010-11
This month, I will share
with you the happenings at
the Sheriff’s Office over the
fiscal year that ended June
30.
In the Enforcement Divi-
sion, our calls for service
have risen over the past two
years, and the number of calls in the year just ending
show an increase of 9 percent over the number of
calls for service two years ago. The real telling num-
ber, though, is the number of calls per day. Deputies
on average received more than 25 calls for service
per day. A typical schedule for our deputies is about
three deputies on duty per 24-hour day. That means
that every single day a patrol deputy is managing the
intake of more than 8 calls per shift. That is a lot, and
I am extremely proud of the effort these men put into
making me as successful as I can be at conserving
the peace in our county. Their efforts have included
solving burglaries, responding to suspicious person
calls, locating stolen vehicles, arresting suspects, in-
vestigating fatal motor vehicle crashes, arresting
drunken drivers, assisting outside agencies, serving
arrest and search warrants, investigating drug offens-
es, and so much more.
Another outstanding accomplishment of our staff
has been the improvement of our civil process servic-
es. One of the primary duties of Sheriff in the Oregon
Constitution is to serve as a ministerial officer of the
county and state courts. Those duties include provid-
ing security at Circuit Court functions and serving all
civil process documents and orders throughout the
county. Last fiscal year, our Civil Process Unit served
nearly 1400 civil case orders and papers, or close to
four cases across this county every single day.
Civil Process services often require painstaking in-
vestigation and follow-up to locate respondents and
make sure people get their day in court to resolve dis-
