Vernonia School Board sets band fees
Recently re-elected school
board member Bill Langmaid
was sworn in to office at the
August 11 Vernonia School
Board meeting.
The board approved new
Band Participation Fee Guide-
lines. Band fees will be $50 for
6th grade band students and
$75 for 7th through 12th grade
band students. Grades 6
through 12 will also have a $50
fee per school instrument. Re-
duced fees are available and
the maximum family or house-
hold fee per year is $150.
Superintendent Dr. Ken Cox
reported that the Chalkboard
Project awarded the district a
$51,250 grant to work on the
CLASS Project. The CLASS
Project is to set up a merit
based system for teachers
based on student results. The
district had asked for $150,000.
After holding an executive
session (closed to the public)
on labor negotiations, the
board approved agreements
with the administrative employ-
ee group and the confidential
and supervisory groups. They
also approved a 2-year con-
tract extension and a second-
ary contract for $1,000 per
month construction supervision
stipend for Cox.
The new school construction
is on schedule, Cox told the
board, with work being done on
the weight room/wrestling room
roof and more steel going up in
the classroom wings.
School starts for students on
September 1, instead of after
Labor Day, and the board
heard a report from Curl’s Bus
Service that all routes are set
up and ready to start picking up
students for that opening day.
The next board meeting is
scheduled for September 15, at
6:00 p.m. in the district office.

Chalk Talk is a column of information
about Vernonia schools. This column
was provided by Curl’s Bus Service.
It’s “Back to School” time. School
buses will be back on the roads, and students are walking along
the side of the road and waiting for buses.
Tips for motorists:
It is a $500 fine for running a stopped school bus with their red
lights on. But if you kill a child it is a lifelong sentence you will
have to live with the rest of your life. Please take the extra time
to be safe for you and the children we care about. It’s not worth
destroying a life for the few minutes you will be stopped.
1. Slow down and obey all traffic laws and speed laws.
2. Be alert and ready to stop. Prepare to stop for school bus
when overhead yellow lights are flashing. Drive with caution if
you see the yellow hazard warning lights flashing on a moving or
stopped bus. Watch for children walking in the street, especially
where there are no sidewalks. Watch for children playing and
gathering near bus stops. Watch for children arriving late for the
bus, who may dart into the street without looking for traffic. When
backing out of a driveway or leaving a garage, watch for children
walking or biking to school.
3. When red overhead flashing lights are on, possibly accom-
panied by an extended stop arm, they tell you the school bus is
stopped to load or unload children. State law requires you to stop
at least 20 feet from the front or rear of a school bus when red
lights are flashing and not proceed until the school bus resumes
motion.
