Between the Bookends

Banks Public Library
Summer reading is wrap-
ping up at the library. We had
a wonderful series of perform-
ers and many enthusiastic
readers. Now it’s time to turn
in reading records and pick up
award books. Records need to
be turned in by Wednesday,
August 31. If you want to
attend the special event at
Oaks Park, turn in your records by Wednesday,
August 10. The Oaks Park summer Reading Celebra-
tion will be Wednesday, August 10. All summer read-
ing participants who meet their reading goals will
receive a coupon good for one deluxe ride bracelet at
a reduced rate of $4.50.
Join us for craft night Wednesday, July 10, from
6:00 to 9:00 p.m. in the community room. Enjoy some
lively conversation while you work on your favorite
craft. Come and meet some new friends or visit with
old ones while using the library’s work space and
enjoying some light snacks. You may find knitters,
scrapbookers, quilters and maybe even a tatter or two.
If you would like to be on an e-mail reminder list for
craft night, call the library with your name and e-mail.
There will be no storytime in August. Please join us
again on Wednesday, September 14, at 10:15 a.m.
The Friends of the Banks Public Library can always
use your support. You can make a tax deductible
donation, become a member, or volunteer. Money that
the Friends raise helps the library purchase Cultural
Passes, upgrade equipment and purchase books and
movies. Also, we take donations of books that are in
good condition.

New books are rolling in as the new fiscal year gets
underway.
There are Things I Want You to Know about Stieg
Larsson and Me by Eva Gabrielsson. Gabrielsson was
Larsson’s life partner for 32 years. Since his novels
were published posthumously, she knew him only
before he was famous. She writes this book to let his
readers know what kind of man he really was and to
give some background to the stories he tells. This is
the love story of a man and a woman whose lives
came to be guided by politics and love, coffee and
activism, writing and friendship. Readers’ most press-
ing questions will be answered, but it is also the story
of struggles for justice and human rights. Gabrielsson
wants to bring to light the man Stieg Larsson was,
rather than the phenomenon he became after his
death.
Faithful Place by Tana French. In 1985, Frank
Mackey was nineteen, growing up poor in Dublin. He
planned to run away with his girlfriend, Rosie Daly.
They would go to London, get married and move on to
a better life. But she doesn’t show up on the night they
are to leave. Mackey figures she changed her mind
and never looks back. Then, 22 years later, Rosie’s
suitcase shows up in a derelict house on Faithful
Place and Frank has to go home and find out what
happened to her. He is a detective now and is
resented by those he left behind, but Frank is deter-
mined to solve the mystery.
A Visit from the Goon Squad by Jennifer Egan.
Bennie Salazar, an aging former punk rocker and
record executive, and Sasha, the passionate, troubled
young woman he employs, confront their pasts in this
powerful story about how rebellion ages, influence
corrupts, habits turn to addictions, lifelong friendships
fluctuate and turn, and how art and music have the
power to redeem.
The Original Argument, The Federalists’ Case for
the Constitution adapted for the 21st Century by
Glenn Beck. The Federalist Papers, the eighteenth-
century collection of political essays pseudonymously
authored by Alexander Hamilton, James Madison and
John Jay, defined, defended, and shaped our Consti-
tution. The Papers laid out the original arguments over
questions that are as relevant and urgent today as
they were at the birth of our nation. Beck has updated
a selection of them into modern English, with his inter-
pretations of their intent.
